Artist of the moment…..Sewell Sillman

Sewell Sillman was an American painter renown for his abstract paintings based on basic geometric shapes and vivid color. Sewell Siollman was born in Savannah, Georgia in the year 1924. Sillman was himself an abstract painter but was perhaps better known to the art world as a publisher of prints by such artists as Jacob Lawrence and Jean DuBuffet.

Sillman was involved in World War 2, after serving he enlisted at Black Mountain College located in North Carolina where he would study under Josef Albers. Albers was a great teacher and found employment at Yale University. Sillman also switched colleges and earned both a bachelors and masters degree from Yale Uniersity.

Sillman would go on to teach at Yale University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Sewell Sillman passed away in 1999 at the age of 65 years old.

The artist worked mainly with oils on masonite.

Price range information: Sorry none available.

Sillman is held in many prestigious collections including the Whitney Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

I enjoy the color and design of this artist. With the  ” window” pictures its easy to see the influence of Josef Albers.
