Artist of the moment…..William Hays Junior and Senior

William Hays Senior was born in New York City in the year 1830. William Hays painted landscapes, still lifes, and animals in a realistic manner. Though he did make trips to foreign countries and to the Western parts of the United States at the time, Montana and the Dakotas, William Hays was based out of New York City and spent much of his time in his studio.

Animals were his favorite subject and in particular the American Buffalo. This artist is one of the premiere artists that tried to capture the United States western region before the white settlers came.

What a great family of artists! Like many of the artists families here be it the Wyeths, the Nyanhongo’s, or the Yoshidas, I am fascinated by the subject matter that is common between the artists. For instance Antoine Blanchard, its great to see the landscapes his daughters painted of the  same subject. Its great to see that the son had a great love of painting animals, something he probably inherited from his father.
