Artist of the moment…….Manfong Lee

 

Manfong Lee was born in Guangzhou, China in the year 1913 . Manfong Lee loved to paint the landscapes and region of Asia and also created fantastic images of island life in small countries such as Bali. Lee also painted portraits, still life works, and many varieties of cats including tigers, and birds.

His wife was a professional pianist.

In the early 1930s he began working as a commercial artist for a Dutch company and relocated to the Netherlands. He would return years later on a  scholarship for three years of study.

Lee was granted Indonesian citizenship and died in Jakarta, Indonesia in the year 1985.

Price range information: Works range from $10,000 to $3 million and the artist worked in oils and pastels.

Recently Christie’s Auction House held a viewing showing many works of Manfong Lee. Lee was a master and creating works with many people.  Here in this clip we take a much closer look at the painting that appears last in the gallery above:

What a well rounded artist who could paint anything! Lee seems to have mastered all mediums.

Artist of the moment……..Zaha Hadid

 

 

Zaha Hadid is a wonderful contemporary architect and sculpture artist that has created many well known buildings around the world. Zaha Hadid was born in Baghdad, Iraq  in the yar 1950.

Hadid attended colleges in Lebanon and the United Kingdom where she studied architecture and math.

Zaha Hadid has won many awards for architectural work including the Pritzker Award. This prize is given to the best architect living or dead since 1979. Hadid has been the only female to win this prestigious award.

Price range information: Works in acrylics and lithographs start at $3,000 up to larger works made of glass which can reach $100,000.

The artist has also taught at the collegiate level at Harvard Graduate School.

Here Hadid gives her thoughts and ideas on the creative process involved in architecture:

Hadid now teaches in Austria at the collegiate level and runs her own design firm which employs between 300 and 400 people.

What a great story! We can only hope that the violence ends soon so that Hadid’s designs can be seen all over the Iraqi skyline.

Artist of the moment…….Joseph Overstreet

 

Joseph Overstreet is an American painter renown for his abstract works that use bold and bright colors. Overstreet was born in Conehatta, Mississippi in the year 1934.

Overstreet was a great draftsman and found employment with Walt Disney as an animator. After working this job Overstreet heading for New York to further his artistic talents. Disney was a good job but didn’t allow him the freedom of expression.

Before the days of computers artists hand drew the thousands of images used to create a cartoon. This was Overstreet’s job, drawing and painting many of the same images with very slight changes. Overstreet yearned to express himself so he took off for New York City.

Overstreet attended Contra Costa College and the California School of Fine Art. Overstreet has also taught at the collegiate level at the University of California at Hayward.

Overstreet has created politically charged works in the 1960s and 1970s, but now creates abstract works that incorporate Native American and African American symbols.
