Artist of the moment…..photographer Thomas Struth

Thomas Struth was born in Geldern, Lower Rhein, Germany in the year 1954.  For his artistic education Struth studied with the husband and wife team Bernd and Hilda Becher at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art. Some subjects the artist has explored include portraits, interior design and decoration. Struth was also very interested in architecture and also did a large body of work showcasing the fronts of buildings.

Other popular series include skyscrapers and cityscape.

Thomas Struth has received commissions from the King and Queen of England.

Struth has exhibited at the Tate Liverpool and was also included in a Venice Biennale.

Struth divides his time amongst Berlin and New York City.

The artist is married to an author named Tara Bray Smith.

Price range information: Works range from $10,000 to $100,000 for the most part. At auction a work has broken the one million dollar barrier.

Artist of the moment…..Photographer Candida Hofer

Candida Hofer is a photographer born in  Eberswalde, Germany in 1944. For her artistic education the artist attended Kunstakadamie in Dusseldorf. Her father was a famous journalist that was employed by the Nazi party and responsible for a large amount of its propaganda. The artist is known for love of architecture and large empty spaces when it comes to shooting interior scenes.

Candida Hofer started out her photography career as a portrait photographer working for newspapers.

Another well liked series was done on zoos in Europe. Images like the giraffe in the gallery.

The artist also did a great series concentrating on the design and interior of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

Was a student of the Becher family. I wrote about this family a short time ago, they were famous for photographing industrial images for example a coal mine or a water tower. Most of their students worked in black and white, Candida Hofer was one of few students that worked with color.

price range information:  Works range from $1,000 to $110,000.

First solo exhibition was in 1975 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Artist of the moment…..Photographer Thomas Ruff

Thomas Ruff is a world renown photographer known for his abstract works, nudes, and landscapes. Born in Harmersbach, Germany in 1958. For his artistic education Ruff attended the National Academy of the Arts in Dusseldort, Germany. As a student he also studied abroad in Rome, Italy.

price range information: Works range from $500 to $200,000.

Has been part of teaching faculty at the Kunstakakademie of Dusseldorf, Germany.

His main professors were the Becher family, a husband and wife photographer team based out of Dusseldorf that specialized in shooting images of industrial images. In this clip Ruff talks about how the Bechers influenced his photography, especially when shooting portraits.

First well received series featured the Interiors of German houses.

Ruff started making his signature abstract color works in the 1980s.

Often includes borrowed images from the pop culture world such as manga or text which appear in his digitally altered images.

Ruff is also renown for his shots with very abstract shapes such as the topography of mars. This clip features a show covering these works.

International exhibitions include the Venice Biennale and Ruff has had works shown at the Tate London.
