Artist of the moment…….William Conger



William Conger is an American abstract artist born in Dixon, Illinois in the year 1937. In addition to paintings Conger also creates wonderful collage works.

Conger attended the University of New Mexico. Conger went on to earn a MFA from the University of Chicago.

Conger was largely influenced by painter Raymond Johnson. Johnson has been profiled here already and was a leader of the Transcendentalist painters.

The artist began exhibiting his artwork in 1958.

The artist considers himself to paint in an improvised manner. Nothing is planned or thought too far in advance. Conger also hopes to achieve a flat paint surface void of excessive texture or brushwork.

Artist of the moment……Ken Kalman

Ken Kalman is a wonderful sculptor who uses animals,insects, and maps as his subject matter. Ken Kalman was born in Detroit, Michigan in the year 1955. For his artistic education Kalman attended Boston University , the University of New Mexico located in Albuquerque, New Mexico earning a bachelors degree in painting. The artist also earned a MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Kalman creates his artwork  out of cast aluminum and found materials.

The artist works in varied sizes from table sized works to public sized commissioned works made out of cast aluminum.

Kalman was also a teacher at many colleges and universities in California including the San Francisco Art Institute and Modesto Junior College.

Kalman is part of many prestigious collections including the United States Department of State located in Washington D.C. and the NBAs Milwaukee Bucks.

Its great to see insects portrayed in sculpture. Kalman has a great sense of design. Some of his sculpture animals works remind of the graphic artist Charley Harper.
