Artist of the moment………Maya Hayuk



Maya Hayuk is a contemporary American street artist renown for her abstract work with geometric shapes. Maya Hayuk was born in Baltimore, Maryland in the year 1969.

Hayuk attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design located in Boston. She also studied at the Skowhegan School of Art and also in Odessa, Urkaine.

The artist works in various sizes from multiple story size murals to smaller works such as the hamburger in the gallery.

In 2013 the artist was chosen for a show at the gallery of the University of California at Los Angeles. In this clip we visit this show:

In addition to painting Hayuk has worked in many mediums including photography, printmaking, and writing. She has also curated many exhibitions.

Hayuk draws on patterns that exist in real life including mandalas and patterns found on manicured nail art. Mandalas are part of the Hindu and Buddhist religions and they are circular shapes that represent the universe.

The artist has a wonderful sense of design and color. Her shapes and bold color choices remind me of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes.




Artist of the moment……….Alexander Liberman


Alexander Liberman was a painter and sculptor renown for his abstract works. Alexander Liberman was born in Kiev, Ukraine in the year 1912. The artist was educated in Russia, England, and France but didn’t study art.

Over his career Liberman worked for Conde Nast magazine in various artistic and design positions within the company. He ended as an editorial director for the magazine.

He took up painting and sculpture in the 1950s.

Liberman is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The artist became an American citizen in 1946.

Alexander Liberman passed away in 1999 at the age of 87 years old.

Artist of the moment………Chana Orloff


Chana Orloff was born in the Ukraine in the year 1888. Orloff was a sculptor who worked with the figure in with a modernist style.

Chana Orloff attended school in Paris, France.

Her private life had some unfortunate incidents. She married a writer and the couple had a son. Her first husband passed away after the influenza epidemic. Later when the Nazi’s invaded her country, she fled to Switzerland. This time the fellow she left with, artist Georges Kars, killed himself. When she returned home she found her studio and most of the work in it had been looted.

Chana Orloff passed away in 1965.

price range information: The artist occasionally worked in oils, and these paintings can start around $5,000. Sculptures can bring as much as $400,000.

Orloff completed works of many high ranking Israeli politicians.

Artist of the moment…..Sonia Delaunay Terk

Sonia Delaunay Terk was renowned for helping to develop the Orphism movement. Sonia Delaunay was born in Gradizhsk, Ukraine in the year in 1885. The Orphism movement emphasized strong colour and basic geometric shapes. Her designs were used in textile industries and fabrics. The artist also worked as theater set designer.

For her artistic education Sonia Delaunay attended the schools in Karlsruhe, Germany and Paris, France.

After college she worked as a designer of clothing, fabrics, and handbags.

The artist passed away in 1979.

Sonia Delaunay was the first living female artist to have a retrospective show at the Louvre in Paris, France.

Delaunay is part of many prominent museums including the Musee of Modern Art located in Paris, France.

Artist of the moment…….David Davidovich Burliuk

David Burliuk was a wonderful Russian painter rewnown for his work with the figure in his trademark Modernist style of painting. David Burliuk was born in Semyrotivka, Ukraine in the year 1882.

For his artistic education the artist took in lessons from many schools. He studied at the Kazan School of Fine Arts located in Tartarstan, Russia. Burtliuk also studied in Munich, Germany, Odessa in the Ukraine. Burliuk also attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts located in Paris, France. The artist also took lessons in Moscow, Russia.

Burliuk is considered by many to be the father of Futurism in Russia.

Burliuk moved to the United States in the early 1920s, settling in Long Island. He lived here for nearly two decades and his house and studio remain.

Price range information: Burliuk worked in pencil, watercolors, and oils. Prices can range from $4,000 to $40o,0oo.

David Burliuk passed away in 1967.

Artist of the moment ….. Adolphe Cassandre

Adolphe Cassandre was a French artist renown for his work with posters. Adolphe Cassandre was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in the year 1901 to French parents living in the Ukraine . Whilst a youngster the artist moved to Paris, France. He is associated with surrealism. For his artistic education Cassandre attended the Academy Julian and the Ecole des Beaux- Arts both located in Paris, France.

Price range information: Prints range from $1,000 to $40,000.

Cassandre was not only a great artist, but also a great businessman. Cassandre was able to start his own advertising agency. Some clients include beverage companies and also travel companies.

A famous work of the Normandie ship, seen in the gallery, this poster has brought more than $10,000 at auction.

His company created new fonts and typeface in addition to painted images.

Also worked with magazine companies designing covers.

After World War 2 the artist got into theater set and costume design.

Adolphe Cassandre committed suicide in 1968 at the age of 67 years old.

Artist of the moment……Ilya Kabakov

Ilya Kabakov is a contemporary artist born in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine in the year 1933. Shortly after his birth his family left the Ukraine for Uzbekistan in order to avoid persecution by the Nazi party. The artist is a painter and also creates installations. To date he has made over 150 installations.

One recurring theme of the artist was flies.

For his artistic education Ilya Kabakov attended the Leningrad Institute of Arts. Kabakov graduated from the Surikov Art Institute.

Started off his art career by illustrating children’s books. This happened in the late 1950s.

It was against his government’s wishes to allow anyone to be an artist as he had hoped, illustrating children’s books was the only way an artist could exist in his land.

In the 1970s Kabakov began to experiment with Abstract- Expressionist. Towards the end of the decade Kabakov even tried conceptual art. This group is now seen as a great force, but at the time the artist’s involved were prohibited from showing their works in public. He group was a big break through for conceptual art in Russia. At the time the government arm the KGB looked into the affairs of the artist.

The artist represented Russia at the Venice Biennale in 1993.

Ilya Kabakov is now based out of Long Island, New York in the United States.
