Artist of the moment……Peter Tunney

 

 

 

Peter Tunney is an American Pop artist renown for his creative use of text. Tunney works as a painter, photographer, installation, and collage artist. Tunney had great success with a series that specialized in skulls.

Tunney shows a wonderful sense of creativity in his use of text. Some of my favorite artists working with text include Mel Bochner, Steven Powers, and Robert Cottingham.

Artist of the moment……Si Scott

 

 

Si Scott is a contemporary British artist renown for his ink drawings of animals. Scott studied art and graphic design at Leeds College of Art and Buckingmanshire Chilterns University.

Scott has worked for many internationally known brands on advertising campaigns. He has also designed album covers.

His style of free flowing animals are very creative but I think his work with text and letters is just as amazing. By using only black and white in most images we are able to view the outstanding drawing skills of Si Scott.

Artist of the moment…………Street Artist Zenoy

 

Zenoy is a street artist from France. Zenoy was born in the year 1974. The artist style is to combine text with comics and other Pop art figures.

The artist started with graffiti back in 1988 using the tag “Awaisun”  In 1990 he changed his name to Zenoy, which he still uses to this day.

In the early 1990s he often work with other street artists making collaborative street art on the trains and subways of Paris.

Price range information: Works range from $3,000 to $10,000.

Artist of the moment……..Street Artist Gabriel Specter

 

 

Gabriel Specter is an American street artist renown for his work with the face and figure. Specter works as a painter, printmaker, and installation artist.

Another great aspect of the artist’s work is his attention to the sense of history of a certain place or time. He does this by paying attention to different lettering styles, such as those find in different advertising campaigns. The artist also uses clothes as a main subject.

Specter has worked with major international brands and is very successful as a commercial artist.

The artist is now based out of Brooklyn, New York.

Artist of the moment…….Zenita Komad

 

Zenita Komad is a contemporary artist from Austria working in a modern style. Zenita Komad was born in Austria in the year 1980. Komad is a painter and photographer.

The artist often adds text or a form of dimensionality to her artwork.

Komad attended the Academy of Fine Art and the University of Applied Art located in Austria.

The artist is based out of Vienna, Austria.

The artist is part of collections in Europe, South Korea, and the United States.

Komad is a great example of a modern Pop artist.

Artist of the moment…….Josh Smith

 

Josh Smith is an contemporary American painter renown for his abstract and collage works which often feature his own name. Josh Smith was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in the year 1976.

Smith attended Miami University for two years before earning a B.F.A. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

 

In many works the artist uses text and also symbols such as leaves, skeletons, and fish. Smith has conquered many mediums in addition to painting including printmaking, sculpture, bookmaking, and ceramics.

Artist of the moment…….Askew One

 

Askew One is a fantastic graffiti artist from New Zealand. The artist uses text in his work but also paints incredible portraits.

Askew One’s government name is Elliot O’Donnell.

He began making street art when he entered high school in the early 1990s.

Below the artist talks about his love of graffiti and art. He :

The artist often uses mixed media in his paintings such as acrylics and enamel. He also paints on unique surfaces such as plexiglass.

The artist is based out of Auckland, New Zealand.

Askew One uses spray paint, acrylic, and vinyl paint in the creation of his art.

I love the artistic statement of Askew One! He thinks of himself as a crash test dummy jumping head first into trouble! This approach has garnered him some fantastic results!

Post number 2,300! ……….Artist Linda Herritt

 

 

Linda Herritt is a contemporary artist renown for her mixed media works, drawings, paintings, and installations. Herritt attended college at Ohio State University at Columbus earning a B.F.A. The artist went to earn an M.F.A.  from the University of Montana located in Missoula.

The artist is a professor at Pace University’s Dyson College of Arts and Sciences located in New York City.

Herritt has won many prestigious fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Pollack- Krasner Foundation.

I enjoy the artist’s creativity in designing an exiting shape for overall design of her text. Some other artists working with text include Denis Brown, Robert Cottingham, and Stephen Powers. I find Herritt’s work reminds me of French street artist Tilt. Tilt will use a graffiti type lettering to build up three dimensional images.

Artist of the moment………photographer Duane Michals

 

 

Duane Michals is an American photographer renown for his black and white images which involve sequences of action. Duane Michals was born in the year 1932.

Duane Michals attended the University of Denver.

Here is a great example of why his style is unique. This sequence of images has an unexpected twist at the end:

Though he studied art in college he didn’t become interested in photography until 1958 whilst visiting the Soviet Union.

The artist has worked as a commercial photographer working for international fashion magazines for multiple decades. Michals also worked for the Mexican government as an official photographer of the 1968 Summer Olympic Games.

Michals is the recipient of the grants from the National Endowment of the Arts.

With the Carnegie Museum of Art we visit the studio of Duane Michals:

The artist is based out of New York City.

Price range information: Works range from $4,000 to $40,000.

My favorite works by this artist are his images of fellow artists. I am sure you recognize Warhol, but did you recognize Rene Magritte wearing his famous hat?

Artist of the moment…….Barbara Jones- Hogu

 

Barbara Jones- Hogu is an American painter renown for figure paintings featuring African Americans. Barbara Jones was born in Chicago, Illinois in the year 1938. The artist is very schooled having earned a bachelor of arts degree from Howard University. She also earned a bachelors of fine arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. Jones- Hogu also received an advanced degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology where she studied printmaking.

Jones- Hogu was a prominent figure in the Black Arts Movement that took place in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s.

The collective for the black arts movement in Chicago was led by Jones- Hogu and was named AfriCOBRA. Short for the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists. Bad being a compliment in this case!

Jones- Hogu is a painter and printmaker.

Barbara Jones Hogu does a wonderful job at blending figures and text. Her choice of colors remind of the 45 LP record albums from the 1960s and 1970s.
