Artist of the moment…….Margarete Bagshaw

Margarete Bagshaw was an American artist renown for her modernist interpretations of Native Art. Margarete Bagshaw was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the year 1964.

Her mother was Helen Hardin and her grandmother was also a famous artist, Pablita Velerde. Three generations of professional artists came from his family! I have already created posts for her mother and grandmother.

Margarete Bagshaw didn’t start to create her own artwork until she was in her mid- twenties.

For a few years the artist was based out of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In this clip a work featuring a female pharaoh:

Sadly Margarete Bagshaw passed away in March of 2015 at the age of 50. She had a brain tumor and recently had a stroke.

Margarete Bagshaw was an awesome artist, creating her own voice despite coming from a family with such an artistic tradition. Its so sad that she passed away at such a young age.

A great interview with Rose Simpson talking about what inspires her:

The artist works often with Apache Skateboard artist Douglas Miles, already profiled here.

Simpson’s work is amazing to see in person. I was impressed not only by the lively look of her figures, but by their massive size. Rose Simpson is certainly a master sculptor working in a very modern and Pop style.

Make sure and check out this artist if you make it to the Denver Art Museum.

Artist of the moment……..Margaret Tafoya

Margaret Tafoya was a ceramics and pottery artist who was in the same league as Maria Martinez when it comes to the art of pottery. Tafoya works in red clay and also the black clay works we associate with Maria Martinez. Margaret Tafoya was born in Santa Clara, Pueblo, New Mexico in the year 1924.

Like many other families profiled here, Margaret Tafoya learned the craft of pottery from her parents. Her mother, Serafina Tafoya was a legendary master of pottery. Serafina lived from 1864 to 1949. Below an example of style.

In this clip some works by Margaret Tafoya are discussed in further detail:
