Happy Birthday to the Eiffel Tower located in Paris, France………

The Eiffel Tower opened on March 31, 1889 in Paris, France. Lets take a look at some great works inspired by this famous landmark.

This wonderful poster work of art was done by David Klein. The American poster artist who has piece of New York City’s Time Square that he created in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

This fantastic work was created by Lorraine Christie. Christie excels at painting large groups of people and uses a subdued palette that makes the bold colors of the figures in her work jump towards the viewer.

This work appears small but in fact is slightly larger than 6 feet in height. I enjoy its unusual perspective and bold color choices. This work was done by Robert Delaunay.

As you may have guessed this work was done by Robert Delaunay’s wife, Sonia Delauney. I enjoy her use of triangle and diamond shapes as well as innovative color choices.

This version of the Eiffel Tower was by one of my favorite French artists, Bernard Buffet. I have written about him on more than one occasion as he got sick so he couldn’t make art anymore, than killed himself by suffocation.

This last painting of the Eiffel Tower was done by Impressionist painter Georges Seurat.

It will be interesting to see if the surrounding landscape of the Eiffel Tower will change over the next decades.

Artist of the moment…..Sonia Delaunay Terk

Sonia Delaunay Terk was renowned for helping to develop the Orphism movement. Sonia Delaunay was born in Gradizhsk, Ukraine in the year in 1885. The Orphism movement emphasized strong colour and basic geometric shapes. Her designs were used in textile industries and fabrics. The artist also worked as theater set designer.

For her artistic education Sonia Delaunay attended the schools in Karlsruhe, Germany and Paris, France.

After college she worked as a designer of clothing, fabrics, and handbags.

The artist passed away in 1979.

Sonia Delaunay was the first living female artist to have a retrospective show at the Louvre in Paris, France.

Delaunay is part of many prominent museums including the Musee of Modern Art located in Paris, France.

Artist of the moment…….Robert Delaunay

Time for another discussion about husband and wife painters, first up the French artsit Robert Delaunay. Robert Delaunay was born in Paris, France in the year 1885. The artist came from a wealthy family of aristocratic pedigree.After high school the artist attended a school that specialized in the decorative arts. Delaunay began his career by painting theater sets.

price range information: Works range from $5,000 for a lithograph to more than $6 million at auction for an original oil. The artist also worked in watercolors, gouache, and produced bronzes.

His wife was also a painter, Sophia Delaunay. Husband and wife helped to found the Orhpism movement. This movement used geometric shapes with bold and vibrant colors.

In some portraits Robert Delaunay uses squares of paint similar to artist Chuck Close. These works have a look similar to that of a mosaic work of art.

Delaunay passed away in 1941.
