Artist of the moment….Paula Scher

Paula Scher is an American artist born in Virginia that loves to work with maps and cartography in her artwork. Scher works for Pentagram, a design company that has offices around the world in London, New York, Berlin, and Austin, Texas.

In this clip we listen to Scher as she talks about a project in creating a cover for Fast Company magazine.

For her collegiate studies Scher attended the Tyler School of Art located in Philadelphia.

For nearly a decade Scher worked with CBS Records and Atlantic Records designing album covers and promotional materials.

She started her own company but a recession came along and the company folded,  Paula Scher then went to work for Pentagram in their New York office.

Part of teaching faculty at the School of Visual Arts of New York.

Scher has done much work for the Public Theater company, helping to bring to focus on up and coming playwrights and actors living in New York City. For this project she designed many promotional posters.

Other promotional jobs include the the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, and Museum of Modern Art.

Also designed a logo for Microsoft.

Her first show using her unique combo of maps and text was wildly successful and was extended as all the pieces sold out. Prints were even made to keep up with the demand. The map paintings sold between $40,000 and $135,000.

Scher is the author of two books.
