William Henry Johnson was an African- American painter and printmaker renown for his folk art style of painting the figure. William Henry Johnson was born in Florence, South Carolina in the year 1901.
The second image in the gallery is a self portrait done by William Henry Johnson.
As a youngster he learned to draw by copying the comic strips he saw in his local newspaper.
Johnson attended the National Academy of Design located in New York City.
The artist stopped painting in 1956. His health was poor and the artist spent much of his life in hospital from problems related to syphilis.Johnson passed away in 1970.

William Baziotes was an American abstract expressionist painter. William Baziotes was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the year 1912.
Baziotes attended the National Academy of Design located in New York City. After graduating he worked with the W.P.A., the Works Progress Administration.

The artist was among the first American painters to work in a Surrealist style.
Baziotes also taught at the collegiate level at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Hunter College, and New York University.
William Baziotes passed away in 1963.

The artist is part of the collections of the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Guggenheim Museum of Art.
Baziotes had a wonderful talent for creating his own style of shapes that were not usually seen in abstract works.
Ad (Adolf Frederick) Reinhardt was one of the first American abstract painters. Ad Reinhardt was born in Buffalo, New York in the year 1913. At the beginning of his career the artist started working in a monochrome style working with using red. This was followed by period of all blue paintings, and then black. The black paintings were produced during the 1960s, at the height of his art career.
From the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City, a closer look at the painting techniques employed by Ad Reinhardt:
Reindhardt was very well schooled having attended Columbia University, the National Academy of Design, the Institute of Fine Arts of New York, and the American Artists School.
Reinhardt taught at the Brooklyn College of art. One famous student of his was modernist sculptor Anne Truitt.
Reinhardt was part of the Works Progress Administration. For these works he painted in a realist style.
Ad Reinhardt passed away in 1967.

Reinhardt was awesome at creating unique shapes in abstract works. When combined with his fantastic use of color the results are spectacular.
Raymond Dabb Yelland was a wonderful painter of landscapes and in particular sunsets born in London, England in the year 1848. His family moved to the United States when the artist was three years old. The artist decided he wanted to be a professional when he was twelve years of age.
Yelland attended college at the National Academy of Design located in New York City. He would also study abroad in Paris, France.
The artist participated in the United States Civil War. After the conflict he relocated to California.
Yelland was a professor at Mills College located in San Francisco, California.
Raymond Dabb Yelland passed away in 1900 due to pneumonia.
Price range information: Yelland worked in oils with prices ranging from $10,000 to $70,000.

Harold Frank was an American painter renown for his paintings of the female face and figure. Harold Frank was born in South Hampton, England in the year 1917. Frank and his family immigrated to the United States when he was four years old in 1921. The artist was considered an abstract expressionist painter.
Frank served in the United States Army.
The artist was raised in New York City. Harold Frank attended the National Academy of Design and the Pratt Institute located in New York City. Frank also attended college in Los Angeles studying at U.C.L.A. and the Chouinard Art Institute.
The artist worked in oils, acrylics, and mixed media.
Charles Warren Eaton was an American painter who worked in a tonalist style. Charles Warren Eaton was born in Albany, New York in the year 1857. Eaton was renown for his landscapes and for his depictions of eastern white pine trees.
His family was not well off financially and young Charles began working at the age of nine.
A friend took a painting class and this inspired Charles Warren Eaton to become a painter. He moved to New York City at the age of twenty two and would attend the Art Student’s League and also the National Academy of Design.
Eaton worked in oils and was also a master painter of watercolor and produced a small number of lithographs and pastel works. He was an original member of the American Watercolor Society.
The artist’s career ended quietly and with few sales due to the economic tough times in America which included the Great Depression.
Charles Warren Eaton passed away in 1937.

Seymour Fogel was an American painter whose career spanned several movements including Abstract Expressionism and Social Realism. Seymour Fogel was born in New York, New York in the year 1911.
Fogel studied at the Art Student’s League of New York. Fogel also attended the National Academy of Design. He left before graduating saying that he learned how to copy subjects and not how to be a painter.
Fogel served as an apprentice to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Fogel helped in Rivera’s mural at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
After serving as an apprentice the artist went on to receive many mural commissions from the government including the Treasury Department.

Fogel enjoyed experimenting with new mediums and created art using plastic, wax, oils, acrylics, and watercolor.
Fogel passed in 1984.
The artist had a great mind for creating organic shapes.
Dwinell Grant was born in Springfield, Ohio in the year 1912. Dwinell Grant was renown for his style of abstraction that used basic geometric shapes.
Grant attended the Dayton Art Institute located in Dayton, Ohio. Grant then moved to New York City and attended the National Academy of Design.
Dwinell Grant taught at the collegiate level at Wittenberg College also located in Ohio.
Here we view one of the many short animated films made by Grant. Remember he didn’t have Microsoft Windows Paint! On many occasions one film might require more than 3,o00 separate drawings. These works are still underappreciated to this day!
The artist enjoyed trying new mediums and produced many short animated films of less than ten minutes in length. Of his time spent in the commercial arena of art the majority of his time was spent medical illustrations.
Much of the artist’s early work was purchased by the Guggenheim Foundation.
Grant was a very successful commercial artist illustrating medical books and even producing training videos for the United States Navy.
Albert Alexander Smith was born in New York City in the year 1896. Albert Smith was the first African American artist to attend the National Academy of Design. Smith was an illustrator for magazines and his work focused on social injustice. Some examples would be people of color heading to the North after seeing a lynching.
Smith was a prolific printmaker and enjoyed etching. Smith worked for a magazine titled “Crisis” which helped promote the NAACP.
Albert Smith served in the Army during World War One.
Smith was also an entertainer and jazz musician. Smith spent time on stage singing whilst in Paris. He lived in Paris for nearly two decades of his life.
The artist found great success in Paris, France. There he was just seen as a great artist rather than a person of color.
