Artist of the moment……..Dorothea Rockburne

 

 

Dorothea Rockburne is a Canadian painter renown for her abstract style. Dorothea Rockburne was born in Monteal, Quebec, Canada in the year 1932.

In 1950 Rockburne relocated to the United States where she studied art at Black Mountain College located in North Carolina. In the United States she also would go on to meet a mathematician who greatly influenced her ideas of design, Max Dehn. Rockburne also studied under artists Philip Guston and Franz Kline.

In addition to mathematics Rockburne finds inspiration for her work in the field of astronomy.

The artist relocated to New York City in 1955.

Rockburne is member of the National Academy of Design.

The artist is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Price range information: The artist works as a printmaker and painter with prices ranging from $5,000 to $30,000.

Two other artist’s who have done works influenced by space and astronomy are Fred Tomaselli and Vija Clemins. All three artists do a great job at using smaller geometric shapes to create larger abstract works.

Artist of the moment……..Street Artist Stikki Peaches

 

 

Stikki Peaches is an amazing street artist and print maker from Montreal, Canada. The artist creates wheatpastes for most of his street art. His work in the studio consists of acrylic paint, silkscreen, and collage.

The artist often uses superheroes and comic strip characters in his work.

Stikki Peaches artwork is a great example of contemporary Pop Art. I really his mix of comic book heroes and celebrity icons.

Artist of the moment…….Street Artist El Seed

 

El Seed is a wonderful street artist working with the art of calligraphy, graffiti art, and  Arabic lettering in his art. El Seed was born in 1981 in the Le Chesnay, France.

El Seed has even teamed up with clothing line Louis Vitton to merge his artwork with luxury designer hand bags.

Though he hasn’t been featured in a large show in the U.S., El Seed has taken part in prestigious shows in Dubai, Paris, and Berlin. Look out for more exciting work from this artist!

The artist received an important commission from the government of Qatar to design some walls showing his work in Doha.

Artist of the moment……..William Henry Clapp

William Henry Clapp was born in Montreal, Canada in the year 1879. Clapp’s family moved to the area of Oakland, California and this is where the artist spent much of his childhood. Clapp was very well schooled studying first at the Montreal Art Association. He then went on to the Academie Julian in Paris, France. Clapp also attended the Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere. Clapp even studied at the School of the Prada Art Museum located in Madrid, Spain.

Clapp even started his own art school, the Clapp School of Art located in Oakland, California.

The artist was part of a group of painters known as the Group of Six. The group painted scenes around Oakland, California that were quite different than other California artists such as the Bay Area artists.

William Henry Clapp passed away in 1954.

Price range information: Works range from $5,000 to $75,000. The artist worked as a painter in oils and also produced lithographs.

Artist of the moment……..Philip Guston

Philp  Guston was born in Montreal, Canada in the year 1913. Guston would go on to become one of the masters of Abstract Expressionist  painting.

Price range information: Lithographs can be found starting around $10,000. Original oils have brought as much as $26 million dollars at auction.

Guston and his family moved to United States and settled down in Los Angeles, California as a youngster.

During his high school years he attended Los Angeles Manual Arts High School where a fellow classmate was Jackson Pollack.

The artist was part of the teaching faculty at many colleges and universities including New York University and the Pratt Institute.

For his artistic education Guston briefly attended the Otil Art Institute of Los Angeles, California.

Guston did works for the Works Progress Administration.

Guston was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Philip Guston passed away in 1980.
