Artist of the moment……Mattiusi Iyaituk

Mattiusi Iyaituk is a contemporary Inuit artist born in the year 1950 in Ivujivik, Quebec, Canada. The artist began carving when he was a young teenager. The artist started out working with the figure in a realistic manner. In 1979 he began working in a more abstract manner.

Price range information: Works range from $2,000 to $7,000.

He first was a poiceman and then won a grant that allowed him to achieve his goal of being a full time professional artist.

Unlike many Inuit artists Iyaituk is a globetrotter having been to far off lands including Russia and China.

Iyaituk has been a past president of the Inuit Art Foundation.

The artist began working in a more abstract matter beginning in 1979. He was working on a piece of a man, he didn’t like the way it was turning out so he changed what he was doing. Of his artwork the artist says that “When you look at my art first, you don’t understand it. You must first have the freedom to dream about what it means.
