Artist of the moment…..Rashaad Newsome

Rashaad Newsome is an African American artist who works in many mediums including collage, film, installations, and performance art. Rashad Newsome was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in the year 1979. His collage works are my favorite as his interpretation of the modern “Coat of Arms” include all of the modern images we see on tv. In addition to the collages or prints, Newsome adds his own sense of design by individually making each frame a work of art.

Price range information: Sorry none available.

Newsome grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and attended college at Tulane University.

The artist was part of the 2010 Whitney Biennial.

Before he was able to support himself as an artist Newsome worked odd jobs from being a nude model to working on underground hip hop music videos.

Newsome is based out of New York City.

In this clip we view some of Newsome’s video work:

One artist that showed the young Newsome he could have a successful art career was Madeleine Faust. Faust is a sculptor and below an example of her style.

As for his film work a heavy influence was film and video artist Paul Pfeiffer. Below an example of his video work.

In this clip Newsome talks about his very unique collage works that deal with his invented style of coats of arms.

What a talented artist who works in many mediums for us to enjoy. For another artist who is familiar to Hip Hop fans check out my article on of MTV’s first VJs Fab Five Freddy.
