Artist of the moment……..Steven DeLair

Steven DeLair is fantastic painter specializing in the landscape. Steven DeLair was born in the year 1944. DeLair attended the University of Nebraska located in Lincoln, Nebraska. DeLair enjoys painting scenes that involve the beach and multiple figures.

DeLair began as an Impressionist painter working in oils. More recently he has began to work with watercolors and acrylics. With these mediums he has chosen to work in a more abstract style with an emphasis on color.

In this clip a great interview with the artist:

Price range information: Many oil on canvas works priced at $2,000 to $6,000. Works featuring acrylics on paper can be found for less than $1,000.

I enjoy the artists new direction that explores abstraction in the landscape. This new style of work reminds me of artist Wolf Kahn.

Artist of the moment…….Aline Feldman

Aline Feldman was born in Kansas in the year 1928. Feldman enjoys working with the landscape in a very modern and traditional manner at the same time. Traditional in the fact that for much of her work she uses the traditional woodblock print. Modern in her use of color and the fact her landscapes are seen from high above, as if the viewer is on a the wings of  bird or inside of an airplane.

For her collegiate education Aline Feldman attended Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri  where she studied under Werner Drewes. Drews was renown for his cubist and also his abstract art. Below an example of Werner Drewes.

Feldman went on to graduate school at Indiana University.

One name you will recognize from this series on woodblock printmaking is Uni’chi Hiratsuka. Feldman studied the art of woodcuts and sumi painting from the master whilst he was in the United States in Washington D.C.

Also interesting is that Aline Feldman tries to use unusual materials in applying her paint, another reason her paint quality is so unique. Sometimes the artist employs kitchen tools or items used when sewing.

Though a printmaker, she works in small edition sizes usually of seven or ten prints.

Price range information: Sorry none available.

What a great use of the woodblock technique. Its obvious that Feldman has been influenced by many artists, much like Masao Madea, and it shows in their work. Feldman’s use of ancient techniques with modern imagery and the very modern view from high above the landscape, make her work exciting and dynamic to look at. One might say it has a very Pop-Art quality!

Awesome Acrylic Artist series…..Sue Averell

Great interview with the artist  from 2007.

The artist from another interview in 2007.

Price ranges: Couldn’t find any price on originals but the artist has prints on http://www.art.com and http://www.allposters.com starting at $28. So the artist has a keen sense for business success! Takes commissions.

The artist’s own website here:  http://sueaverell.com/

The artist paints mainly landscapes and botanicals with her bold and colorful style.  The artist is highly collectible and has works in four different continents.  As part of her painting preparation she makes a full scale replica of her subject to help her plan her painting strategy.

mediums used: acrylic

surfaces used: canvas

The artist attended college in Pasadena at the Art Center College of Design.

This artist is known for her thickly painted canvases that are alive with color and fun shapes. In the drawing of her petals I am reminded of calligraphic strokes. If I had to have one word to describe her work it would be festive.  The drawing technique is representational and filled with expression. The flower doesn’t necessarily have to look like exactly like a flower to be a great painting, if it feels like a painting it can also be a strong piece. Some collectors include the author of the Twilight film and book series as  well as Cisco the computer company.

on line and land based gallery: Richard Danskin Gallery in Palm Desert, CA.   http://www.danskingalleries.com/Averell-Sue.htm

Today try to take an early spring flower like a daffodil and draw how it feels! Exaggerate the warm and cool colors!

Happy painting!
