Franz Bischoff was an American Impressionist painter renown for his landscape paintings of California. Franz Bischoff was born in Steinchönau, Austria in the year 1864. Bischoff emigrated to the United States when he was a teenager.
As a youngster Bishoff learned about design and how to paint with watercolor.

Bischoff had an excellent sense of design and built a great reputation for porcelain painting. He even taught the technique to other artists.
The artist relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1906. It was in California that he produced the best paintings of his career. He spent much time living in Los Angeles and Pasadena.
Franz Bischoff passed away in 1929.

Eric H. Olson was a Swedish visual artist renown for his modernistic style. Eric Olson was born in Sweden in the year 1909. Olson was a painter and printmaker.
Olson began his art career as a landscape painter before switching to a more abstract style in the late 1930s.
Olson was among the first artists to work with light. From painting the artist went on to create works out of glass and later plexiglass.
The artist was based out of Stockholm, Sweden.
Olson worked in many mediums including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and glass. After switching to a more abstract style the artist received many commissions and many works for public places.
Eric Olson passed away in 1996.

Shiro Takagi was a wonderful printmaker renown for his work with the landscape and birds. Takagi Shiro was born in Hirosaki, Aomori prefecture, Japan in the year 1934.
The artist attended Musashino College of Fine Art located in Tokyo, Japan. The artist quit before graduating as he didn’t like the class structure. Takagi also studied privately with an established printmaker, Amano Kunihiro.
Takagi won many prizes at shows featuring print works in both Japan and Brazil.
Shiro Takagi passed away in 1998.
The artist is part of the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

As mentioned in a recent post, many woodblock print artists use the pattern and grain of the wood to give their finished work a high level of abstraction. Takagi sometimes uses the pattern of wood as the clouds and sky.
Hayashi Waichi is a Japanese printmaker renown for his work with flowers. Hayashi Waichi was born in Shizoka prefecture in the year 1951.
Waichi attended the Kanazawa Arts and Crafts College located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan.
Waichi enjoys working in many mediums including painting, printmaking, ceramics, and pottery.

As with most woodblock artists Waichi shows a wonderful sense of design in his art. Waichi also does a great job at controlling his use of the color red. Not too much, not too little, always the right amount.
Fumio Fujita is a master Japanese printmaker renown for his landscapes and images of trees. In his later years his focus has been mainly on trees, but in his earlier years he worked with the landscapes and also made wonderful prints of animals.
Fumio Fujita was born in Aichi prefecture, Japan in the year 1933.
The artist attended Musashino College of Fine Arts located in the western part of Tokyo, Japan.
Fujita began producing woodblock prints in 1963.

Fujita shows a remarkable sense of design always looking for patterns in items such as tree bark and leaves. Overall his work shows a great blend of realism and abstraction.
Michael Kessler is an American mixed media artist renown for his abstract and landscape paintings. Michael Kessler was born in Hanover, Pennsylvania in the year 1954.
Kessler studied at Kutztown University located in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Whilst in college he also studied at the Whitney Museum of Art located in New York City.
After college he took a job as a bus driver to pay the bills while he toned up his art muscles by painting as much as he could.

It has been great to watch the evolution of this artist from the earlier part of his career where he painted landscapes, to his wonderful mixed media abstract pieces he creates now.
Although he seldom paints landscapes the artist has retained his landscape color palette. In this style of abstraction and realism I compare him to the painter Richard Diebenkorn.
David Maisel is an American photographer renown for his aerial shots of the American landscape taken from an airplane. David Maisel was born in New York City in the year 1961.

Maisel received a great collegiate education first earning a B.F.A. Â from Princeton University. He went on to graduate studies first at Harvard before earning a M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts.

Franco Fontana is a modern Italian photographer renown for his works that consist of basic geometric shapes. Franco Fontana was born in Modena, Italy in the year 1933. The artist also creates paintings from time to time.
The artist has seen his work used in the music industry for album covers.

Fontana has worked in many genres including the human figure, landscapes, and fashion. For most of his work he relied on 35 mm cameras.
The artist has enjoyed a great deal of commercial success and has seen his work appear in advertising campaigns of the nations largest companies over his lengthy career.
His works can be found in more than 60 museums around the globe.

My favorite works of this artist are his images of the female figure shot with the basic shapes seen in the swimming pool.

George Morrison was a Native American landscape painter and printmaker. George Morrison was born on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation near Chippewa City, Minnesota in the year 1919. The artist was of Chippewa decent.
Morrison had a well rounded education having studied at the Art Student’s League of New York City. He then went on to earn a degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The artist also studied abroad in France on a Fulbright Scholarship.
Morrison also spent time as a collegiate professor. He was part of the faculty at the University of Minnesota and the Rhode Island School of Design.
In addition to painting landscapes the artist also painted in the style of Abstract Expressionism.

What I enjoy most about the artist George Morrison is his diversity in his choice of mediums. The artist was a painter and printmaker, but he also was renown for making intricate wood collages. His landscapes have great emotional content due to his tremendous use of color.
David Blackwood is a Canadian artist renown his paintings and etchings of the Canadian landscape. David Blackwood was born in Wesleyville, Newfoundland, Canada in the year 1941. The artist calls himself a visual story teller.
Blackwood attended the Ontario College of Art and Design.
The artist began his own studio in the year 1956.

Blackwood was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1993.
The artist was a lead professor at Trinity College School.

What a great printmaker! He reminds me of artist Richard Kipness. Both make wonderful prints of the landscape. The black and white images help to tell the story.
