Artist of the moment……Kananginak Pootoogook

Kananginak Pootoogook was another Inuit master of all mediums born in 1935 in the Cape Dorset, Nunavet Territory, Canada.

Included in the first annual Cape Dorset print collection in 1959. Pootoogook was an artist’s artist working in such mediums as sculpture, etchings, drawings, copper engraving, stencils, stonecuts, and lithography. He was a founding member of the art West Baffin Art Collective.

A favorite subject matter was birds and various wildlife.   I enjoy his designs and use of the color. I love his use of reflection with his images. Many times shapes repeat themselves. For instance a mother bear surrounded with four cubs. What a great use of perspective in his works.

Kananginak Pootoogook passed away in 2010 at the age of 75 years old.

price range information: Works range from $500 to $30,000.

His father was Pootoogook, also an Inuit artist and leader of the camp where he raised his family.

Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
