Artist of the moment……Agnes Denes

Agnes Denes is a contemporary conceptual artist renown for her works which have an emphasis on the environment. Agnes Denes was born in Budapest, Hungary in the year 1931.

Denes attended the New School College and Columbia University located in New York City.

The artist has worked and experimented in many mediums including land art, computer art, poetry, music, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Her largest land art work was a two acre field of golden wheat the artist planted in downtown New York City.

Over her career Denes has pubished six books.

Artist of the moment………..Vilmos Huszár

Vilmos Huszár was a Hungarian painter and designer who was part of the De Stijl movement. Vilmos Huszár was born in Budapest, Hungary in the year 1884.

Huszár also painted in a Cubist style for a period of time. The artist was also a furniture designer and an avid printmaker.

The artist moved to the Netherlands in 1905. He would be based out of the Netherlands for the majority of his career.

As a graphics designer one of his most renown works were advertising campaigns for Miss Blance Virginia cigarettes.

Vilmos Huszár passed away in 1960 at the age of 76 years old.

I enjoy Huszár’s mix of shapes and color. His compositions with individual shapes show a great sense of movement.

Artist of the moment……..Photographer Brassai

Brassai was born Gyula Halasz was born in Brasso, Transylvania in the year 1899. The artist took the name as a tribute to his hometown which was originally in Transylvania, but later became part of Hungary.

Halasz studied art in Germany and Transylvania.

Brassai was renown for his photography, mainly of Paris, that took place at night. These photographs are grainy in texture, and some might not even think they are professional. The artist made these dreamy works as part of his style. He thought these works left a certain mystery to the viewer.

A wonderful example of works by Brassai is shown below:

 

He made a book out of his first photographs of the Parisian night life which was titled Paris At Night. The book contained images of the murky people found in the streets of Paris at this time including prostitutes. The book put the images of Brassai on the international art scene.

Brassai passed away in 1984.

Artist of the moment……..Sandor Bortnyik

Sandor Bortnyik was born in Hungary in the year 1893.

For nearly one decade Bortnyik was in charge of the Academy of Fine Arts located in Hungary. Bortnyik was well known for his graphics design. The artist was known for his work with cigarette brand marketing designs.

Bortnyik passed away in 1976.

Artist of the moment…..photographer Andre Kertesz

Andre Kertesz was a wonderful photographer born in Budapest, Hungary in the year 1894. Kertesz was renown for his work with experimental photography. He enjoyed distorting the female figure. Kertesz also enjoyed shooting the still fife and architecture works. His architecture studies remind me of the paintings of Dean Mitchell or Ed Hopper.

Whilst working as a clerk at the Budapest Stock Exchange he bought his first camera in 1912, at the age of eighteen years old.

The artist relocated to to Paris in 1925 where he would have his first exhibition in 1927.

Published three books of his photographs in the 1930s.

Andre Kertesz immigrated to the United States in 1936.

Winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Andre Kertesz passed away in 1985 at the age of 101 years old.
