The Goodwill franchise has come across another great deal and story! I wrote in the past about people that found great bargains at Goodwill such as Ilya Bolotowsky and Alexander Calder for less than$20. Bolotowsky ended up fetching more than $30,000 at auction. The Calder was a print that broke the $9,000 barrier. The new find has to do with an Italian master named Giovanni Battista Torriglia.
The piece was found by Goodwill employee Maria Rivera in a Manassas, Virginia Goodwill store. The work is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. The piece will sell via Goodwill’s website.
Giovanni Torriglia was born in 1857. He was born in Genoa, Italy which is now the sixth largest city in Italy. Though born in Genoa he was trained in Florence, Italy. When he was at his peak as a painter, at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, paintings of people in an idyllic country setting where very popular so this became his main focus.
The artist worked in his studio but also took a fair amount of commissions that dealt with the painting and design of the interiors of churches.
Torrigli reminds me of modern painter Morgan Weistling born in 1964. Weistling is a tremendous painter that hs a wonderful sense of design. His style of design and use of light is very similar to Torriglia. Also the two artists enjoy painting scenes of family and celebration. This piece by Weistling is titled “End of Harvest.”
Torriglia passed away in 1937 at the age of seventy nine years old.
Price range information: $50,000 to $200,000
