Gene and Rebecca Tobey were a wonderful artistic duo who worked mainly with ceramics producing wonderful modernist animal works.
Gene Tobey was born in Utah in the year 1945. Gene worked as a pottery instructor at Casper Community College located in Casper, Wyoming. Gene also taught in Oregon.
Gene Tobey passed away from cancer in 2006 at the age of 60.

Rebecca Tobey has also worked in a similar style as her husband using ceramics to produce modernist animals.
Rebecca Tobey was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the year 1948. Her mother enjoyed painting and her father a scientist. Tobey attended Adelphi University located in New York City.

As a couple the team did many large works including a statue for the School of Law located at Baylor University located in Texas. Gene and Rebecca Tobey were married in 1985. The duo was based out of Mason, Texas. As a couple the team experimented with new mediums including bronzes.
The couple met in Sante Fe, New Mexico in the year 1984. Rebecca was a gallery director and Gene was showing his pottery at this location.
As a team Gene was the sculptor and Rebecca was the glaze technician.

What a unique and modernist work. Many schools of art including the Shona artists of Zimbabwe seem to be represented in their works. My favorite are the buffalo with painted birds. Very unique!
