Artist of the moment…….Lukas Samaras

Lukas Samaras was born in Kastoria, Greece in the year 1936. The artist is renowned for his disdain of people and his narcissism. If you have seen the work of Chuck Close, you may recognize this famous image made by Close of artist Lukas Samaras.

One of Samaras most acclaimed series is one of the artist posing for himself using a Polaroid camera. These images remind me of the modern day selfies.

Samaras attended Rugers, University located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Some of his classmates include the great Claes Oldenburg, already profiled here.

The artist works in many mediums including painting, performance art, sculpture, and photographer. Its not fair to classify him to one medium, the artist works in many mediums and uses a great deal of creativity in his art.

Here we visit a show featuring the work of Lukas Samaras with the great James Kalm:

Price range information:  Works range from $12,000 to $400,000.

A documentary was made on the life of Lukas Samaras, below a trailer for this movie:

I enjoy the many subjects explored by the artist. I would enjoy a series of his done on birds, but using all mediums from photography to performance art.

Samaras is part of prestigious collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Museum, and the Getty Museum.

Artist of the moment……..Fernand Leger

Fernand Leger was a wonderful artist who worked in many mediums was one of the foremost Cubist painters. From the Moma in New York City we visit a great selection of works by Fernand Leger:

The artist was drafted into the Army and discharged with a head injury. His war left an impact on the artist and many works including murals have a strong social commentary to them.

Fernand Leger helped to found a Cubist painting school in 1924 based out of Paris, France. Leger also made his first film during this year about ballet dancers. Below is the film by Leger. Leger in this manner reminds of Warhol with his use of the film as a medium.

Fernand Leger passed away in 1955.

Leger has a museum featuring his work in Biot, France. In this clip some great images from the museum:

Price range information: Works range from lithographs at $5,000 with oils breaking the $20 million dollar mark at auction.

What a wonderful husband and wife team Fernand and Nadia were. Able to paint and teach others their craft! Surely one of my favorite husband and wife painting teams. Other husband and wife teams who help many others to paint in their same style would be David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw. Another couple is Wende Caporale and Daniel E. Greene.

Artist of the moment…..Rashaad Newsome

Rashaad Newsome is an African American artist who works in many mediums including collage, film, installations, and performance art. Rashad Newsome was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in the year 1979. His collage works are my favorite as his interpretation of the modern “Coat of Arms” include all of the modern images we see on tv. In addition to the collages or prints, Newsome adds his own sense of design by individually making each frame a work of art.

Newsome grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and attended college at Tulane University.

The artist was part of the 2010 Whitney Biennial.

Before he was able to support himself as an artist Newsome worked odd jobs from being a nude model to working on underground hip hop music videos.

Newsome is based out of New York City.

In this clip we view some of Newsome’s video work:

One artist that showed the young Newsome he could have a successful art career was Madeleine Faust. Faust is a sculptor and below an example of her style.

As for his film work a heavy influence was film and video artist Paul Pfeiffer. Below an example of his video work.

In this clip Newsome talks about his very unique collage works that deal with his invented style of coats of arms.

Artist of the moment…photographer Laurie Simmons….

One of my favorite photographers is Laurie Simmons. Simmons was born in 1949 in Long Island, New York.

For her collegiate studies she attended the Tyler School of Art located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Early works were similar to her photographic works now as she focused on the interiors of houses.

I love her creative ideas that blend the super creative child in all of us with her creative genius. Her series of items with legs attached includes model houses, guns, and cameras.

Has won a fellowship from the Guggenheim and also the National Endowment for the Arts.

Listed in the Internet Movie Data Base as an actress, producer, and director.

Simmons is also renown for working with dolls.

A clip from the PBS series often recommended on this site, the Art21 series.

A great interview with a curator.

Having only seen the artist’s work via computer screen, I imagined the works to be photoshopped but they are in fact small replica doll houses. In this clip we visit Laurie Simmons as she creates some very small furniture sure to be called art!

Based out of New York city.
