Artsit of the moment……Edmund Osthaus

Edmund  Osthaus was born in  Hildesheim,  Germany in the year 1858. He was one of the world’s best painters of dogs. For his artistic education Osthaus attended the School of Arts in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Osthuas first came to the United States in 1883. His parents came to the United States previously, and he joined them when he was twenty five years of age.

Some breeds he enjoyed painting were setters and pointers.

Whilst living in Ohio Osthaus became a teacher. He was the chief instructor at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts.

The artist was an avid outdoorsman and owned houses in New Jersey, Ohio, and even a hunting lodge in Florida.

Edmund Osthuas passed away at the age of 70 years old in 1928.

If you enjoy art that has to do with dogs make sure and check out my posts on John Weiss, my favorite painter of the dog. Also photographer William Wegman has made some wonderful photographs using dogs as his subject. Another great painter of the dog was Arthur Wardle.

Price range information: The artist was prolific in both watercolour and oils. Prices range from $10,000 to $200,000.
