Ossip Zadkine was an artist associated with the Cubist and Art Deco movements. Ossip Zadkine was born in Vitsebsk, Russian Empire in the year 1890. This area is now called Belarus. Zadkine was a painter, sculptor, and print maker.
Zadkine briefly attended the Ecole des Beaux Artes located in Paris, France.

Gaston LaChaise was a wonderful sculptor renown for his innovative sculpture work with the female figure. Gaston LaChaise was born in Paris, France in the year 1882. His father was a furniture maker.
The artist attended the Ecole des-Beaux Arts located in Paris.

The artist came to the United States in 1906. He found employment in his field of sculpting working for a company that produced military monuments.
After coming to the United States he further developed his own style of working with the female figure. The artist worked with the figure, but was also an excellent sculptor of animals due to his work with the monument company.
LaChaise passed away in 1935.

LaChaise is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City and the Art Institute of Chicago.

LaChaise was a master at producing the female form with all of its dramatic and lovely curves.
Mauro Corda is a fantastic sculptor born in Lourdes, France the year 1960. Corda enjoys trying to capture human emotion in the figure when facing stressful and intense situations.
Corda attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in both Reims and Paris.
Corda’s work is unique as a sculptor for what he adds to his work for a patina. The artist often uses chrome, gold and silver leaf, and silver in his sculptures. The artist will often recreate the same subject matter in different materials to try and express a different emotion.

Corda has been based out of Paris, France for nearly three decades.

The artist in me would like to see what Corda would come up with for a modern design for the Rolls Royce female figure. Corda’s work is very reminiscent of the Art Deco period.
Jean Carlu was a French born artist who became famous for his poster work in the World War 2 era. Jean Carlu was born in Bonnieres-Sur-Seine, France in the year 1900.
Carlu attended Les Ecoles des Beaux-Arts located in Paris where he studied architecture. Due to an accident Carlu had his right arm amputated and he switched from studying architecture to graphic design and illustration. His family tree included many architects. One brother of Carlu’s named Jacques designed one of Paris’ most famous castles, the Palais de Challoit.

Jean Carlu passed away in 1997.
One of his most famous works was for the wine label for a 1924 Mouton- Rothschild wine. He was also associated with a brand of soap called Mon Savon, which can be seen in the gallery.

Seymour Boardman was a wonderful abstract artist born in Brooklyn, New York in the year 1921. Over his career the artist worked in many styles usually with color, but in the 1970s he worked in black and white. In the late 70s and 80s Boardman focused on rectangular shapes with vivid color.
Boardman attended the City College of New York City.
The artist served in the United States Air Force during the Second World War. He was badly injured and as a result had some paralysis of his arm and shoulder. After being granted a medical discharge from service Boardman enrolled at Ecole des Beaux Arts located in Paris, France. Boardman also attended the Academie De La Grand Chaumiere, and studied with Fernand Leger.
Boardman moved back to the United States where he studied at the Art Student’s League of New York City.
The artist is part of the Guggenheim and Whitney Museum collections.
Seymour Boardman passed away in 2005 at the age of 84 years old.
Chaim Soutine was born in Smilavichy, Russian Empire in the year 1893. Soutine painted landscapes but is better known for his very expressive style of painting portraits. This area is now Minsk, Belarus.

Soutine attended the Academy of Fine Arts located in Vilnius, which is now part of Lithuania. After his studies there he moved abroad to Paris, France where he would attend the Ecole Des Beaux Arts.

The painter Modigliani was a close friend and painted Chaim Soutine often.
Soutine also loved to paint animal carcasses. On many occasions neighbors complained of the smell of decaying animals and would call upon the police to remove the smell of their neighbor the artist! Soutine was inspired to paint these works based on the famous work Rembrandt completed of decaying meat.
Soutine found support from an American collector, and did rather well for himself before the onset of World War 2. He was in France and it was invaded by the Germans. As he was Jewish, he fled and spent time sleeping outside and always on the run. He developed an ulcer and tried to seek emergency surgery to fix it, but the surgery didn’t help and he passed away in 1943 at the age of 50 years old.
Price range information: Chaim Soutine is heavily collected and prices for a small oil painting start in the mid six figure range up to $20 million for a larger original oil.
I love the expressiveness of his sitters in the portraits. I enjoy looking at portraits of people who are living and breathing in the painting such as those by the Dutch master Frans Hals.
Isidore Jules Bonheur was another child of the aforementioned Oscar Raymond Bonheur. Isidore was the younger brother to Rosa Marie Bonheur, already profiled here Rosa excelled at painting animals and the landscape. Isidore Bonheur is seen as the one of the best sculptors of the animal genre. Isidore Bonheur was born in 1827 in Bordeaux, France.
The artist began his career as a painter but switched to sculpture very early on.
The artist grew up assisting his sister in their father’s studio. His sister Rosa Marie Bonheur would go on to boast how she was the one who first gave lessons to Isidore, not their father.
For his artistic education Isidore attended the Ecole des Beaux- Arts located in Paris, France.
The artist was a frequent exhibitor and prize winner at the famed Paris Salon.
Isidore Bonheur was knighted for his works in France, Spain, and Portugal.
The artist passed away in 1901.
Price range information: The artist produced small tabletop sculptures so he is really affordable. Works range from $5,000 to $100,000.

Auguste Bonheur was another child of the renown painter and teacher Oscar Raymond Bonheur. Auguste Bonheur was born in Bordeaux, France in the year 1824. Auguste Bonheur was renown for his paintings of animals and the landscape.
Auguste Bonheur was the first son born to Oscar Raymond Bonheur.
The artist was a medal winning artist at the famed Paris Salon.
For his artistic education Auguste Bonheur attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts located in Paris, France.
His sister has already been profiled here, Rosa Marie Bonheur. A wonderful painter of the animals and the landscape.
The artist passed away in 1884 in Paris, France.

Auguste Bonheur is part many prominent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, England and the Museum of Art located in New York City.

Thomas Alexander Harrison was a brother of the Birge Harrison, the aforementioned artist who painted wonderful snow scenes. Thomas Harrison was born in the year 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who was renowned for his paintings of the sea and marine scenery.
For his artistic education Thomas Harrison attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition Harrison studied at the San Francisco School of Design and the Ecole des Beaux Arts located in Paris, France.
After college he found a career as a mapmaker. He was employed by the United States government.
Over his career Harrison won many prestigious awards from the famed Paris Salon.
Thomas Harrison passed away in 1930 in Paris, France.
Price range information : Works range from $5,000 to $50,000.
A third brother who was a professional painter was Butler Harrison. Butler Harrison specialized in painting the figure, but I couldn’t find any examples.
David Burliuk was a wonderful Russian painter rewnown for his work with the figure in his trademark Modernist style of painting. David Burliuk was born in Semyrotivka, Ukraine in the year 1882.
For his artistic education the artist took in lessons from many schools. He studied at the Kazan School of Fine Arts located in Tartarstan, Russia. Burtliuk also studied in Munich, Germany, Odessa in the Ukraine. Burliuk also attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts located in Paris, France. The artist also took lessons in Moscow, Russia.
Burliuk is considered by many to be the father of Futurism in Russia.
Burliuk moved to the United States in the early 1920s, settling in Long Island. He lived here for nearly two decades and his house and studio remain.
Price range information: Burliuk worked in pencil, watercolors, and oils. Prices can range from $4,000 to $40o,0oo.
David Burliuk passed away in 1967.
