Artist of the moment…….Grace Crowley

Grace Crowley was an Australian artist renown for her abstract style of paintings. Grace Crowley was born in Barbarra, New South Wales, Australia in the year 1890. Her family raised livestock such as cattle and sheep.

Crowley attended Methodist Ladies College located in Burwood, New South Wales, Australia . Later the artist studied with the famous Andre Lhoté in Paris, France. Lhoté was a key mentor and this helped to shape Crowley’s use of colour in her paintings.

The artist was part of the first abstract art exhibition in Australia.

In this clip we view a works by Grace Crowley:

I enjoy the abstract qualities of Grace Crowley’s work found in her more realist paintings. They remind of the abstract qualities found in the work of the famed painter Nicolai Fechin. Both artists use a great deal of abstraction even in their more realist and impressionist paintings.  Crowley was gifted at painting in both impressionist and abstract styles.

Artist of the moment…..Kawanishi Hide

Kawanishi Hide was a wonderful Japanese printmaker. Kawanishi Hide was born in Kobe, Japan in the year 1894. Hide even produced a series on variation locations in the city.

Some recurring themes for Hide include the circus and portraits.

The artist was influenced by the Art Deco movement. Hide was a self taught artist.

Hide began as an oil painter, but switched to printmaking after seeing some wonderful prints in person.

Before turning to art Hide was a postal worker. His family was wealthy and owned shipping companies and as coincidence would have it, a private post office. The company was the Post Net of its day.  This business was bought by the government and Hide became a government employee.

Artist of the moment…….Tim Bavington

Tim Bavington was born in England in the year 1966. As we continue are discussion on the automobile in art Bavington uses an automotive spray gun instead of a brush in making vertical strokes his art. For his artistic education Bavington attended the Art Center College of art and Design earning a B.F.A. Bavington went on to earn an M.F.A. from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. For his mediums Bavington uses acrylics and synthetic polymer.

Part of Bavington’s artistic process is to use blend music and art. The artist uses the computer to develop his own system where certain colors are attached to certain sounds and instruments. A painting of rock music would be drastically different than a painting of an opera. Bavington is very unique in his approach to creating. Sometimes the artist even makes reference the song in question in the title.

In this clip we  make a visit to the artist’s studio:

In this clip we take a behind the scenes look to watch a work completed with curved lines:

And lastly we check out the artist working in his more familiar vertical stripe pattern:

Tim Bavington is now based out of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Artist of the moment…….Stinkfish

Stinkfish is a wonderful street artist from Mexico who paints portraits with fantastic color and vibrancy. Stinkfish was born in Mexico and grew up in Bogota, Colombia. The artist works on anything that can be painted on! My personal favorite works of the artists are the works created on found magazine covers including Playboy and the  New York Times.

The artist began to work with stencils in the early 2000s and in 2003 created a great work that put him on par with other great street artists. The work was of John F. Kennedy saluting his dead father. Stinkfish prefers to paint on older walls, even with cracks in them that are highly textured.

The artist paints  mainly on the continent of South America.

In this clip we view Stinkfish at work on a piece of art!

Artist of the moment….Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela has been everywhere the past few days, but lets take a look at some wonderful artwork he produced back in the early 2000s. Mandela was incarcerated for nearly 3 decades on Robbin Island.

For this series that depicts many locations of his surroundings, he made 20 images.

As an artist I find he has a great sense of design. He left out so many shapes and put  in only the essentials. Imagine how many items are actually in a prison cell. But his cell looks empty and lifeless.

I also find his printmaking style interesting. Many artists that did illustration in the golden age of illustration used a method of paint and charcoal, sometimes allowing the charcoal to show through.  Mandela used a black crayon for his outline. The lines aren’t the boring and straight as you would expect, but they have nice uneven weight to them, making them far more exciting than one might normally think.

Its great to see a great person making great art! Another artist who made great work at an advanced age!

This link has further detail on his Robben Island series. A brief background about each image is given:

To close we take a look at my favorite work of art that uses Mandela as a subject. This work is done by an artist who uses laser cut wood and steel to make wonderful sculptures. His name is Marco Cianfanelli.
