Artist of the moment……Aminah Robinson

Aminah Robinson is an African American artist born in Columbus, Ohio in the year 1940. For his collegiate education Aminah Robinson attended what is now the Columbus College of Art and Design. Robinson is a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Her sculpture work is made up from an idea she got as a child, everything could be an art material and to make your own materials if need be. She refers to her  works as made out of “hogmawg.” Some materials used include mud, grease, glue, and natural dyes.

I enjoy the exaggerated hand she uses in many of her figures. The viewer can easily get an idea as to how hard it must have been to be a hard laborer, working in the cotton or tobacco fields of the South.

Price range information: Sorry none available.

In this clip we go to the home studio of Aminah Robinson:

What a remarkable artist! I compare her works to the great Betye Saar. I enjoy her use of mixed media such as buttons in  her artwork!

Below a brief biography about Robinson with more of her artwork:

Happy Holidays…..A Gift for my Grandparents!

Below is a work I just completed yesterday. The title is MY GRANDPARENT’S KITCHEN TABLE.

So many holiday meals have been shared at this table, but I wanted the kitchen to appear as it does most of the year, without any decorations and my grandparents usual seats.

Its a paper collage that measures 12 by 12 inches.

And below is a beagle that I painted in the 7th grade for my grandparents present. I painted it in 1989. What a wonderful journey its been!

2013-12-26 07.31.00

I will be posting regularly again next week after my holiday break is over.

Try and keep creating even though its the holidays!

In this clip a wonderful tour thru a botanical garden in New York City showing many works of Manolo Valdes:

I love the modern look of Valdes’ women made with collage. Not only do they have very feminine features, sometimes no nose, but the papers used for the clothing or fan are excellent in their variety and patterns.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!! A new work by me!!!

Happy Halloween!  One of my favorite genre’s is the collector and their house as art. In this work I wanted to celebrate visual artists who created something associated with my FAVORITE holiday!

Each panel is 9  by  12  inches. Medium is paper collage.

This is a diptych, a two panel work. As a child I loved to watch the Addams Family so I thought what other art pieces might exist in the house besides the fish with the human leg sticking out.

All artists have been written about on my website!

Pumpkin-   Japanese master Yayoi Kusama.

Frakenstein- Vik Muniz, Frankenstein, caviar monster series. The artist recreated monsters using beluga caviar.

Vampire Mouth- Ruby Sterling

Pumpkin Head Man- Jamie Wyeth

Platinum skull- Damien Hirst

Witches Hat- Robert Therrien

Happy Halloween everyone and try to make some artwork to celebrate the holiday!

Artist of the moment……Mel Chin

Instead of doing my normal gallery, Since Chin is more a conceptual artist more so than just a visual artist, I will give some color on each image in this article. Though he is a conceptual artist, Chin is an excellent draughtsman.

This work was inspired by the many hours spent looking at encyclopedias when he was growing up. He made collages of figures. If you love this type of work check out my favorite collage artist, Peter Clark. Below is a Chin’s style of collage done with encyclopedias.

Mel Chin is wonderful conceptual artist born in Houston, Texas in the year 1951. He was one of six children. He is known for putting art where it usually isn’t. Some examples would be in a landfill or a destroyed home.

In this picture we view a collaboration with Mel Chin, software developers, and rug and carpet patterns. A great mix of old and new technologies I have never seen. Again the artist is hard to classify as he can work in so many mediums, a true artist!

In this clip from the PBS series Art21, we listen to the artist himself talk about his many trips to New Orleans and how he has taken it upon himself to improve the lives of the children of the area. The children were in a tough situation without Katrina. The artist was so overwhelmed with the feeling of  hopelessness he left, but returned a better person with thoughts of how to overcome his problems. The children were growing up in an area deemed by the Environmental Protection Agency to have dangerously high content of lead.

In this work titled SafeHouse, we see a great example of Chin putting art where it isn’t usually seen, an abandoned house.

Here the artist talks about how art can make one feel uncomfortable.

Mel Chin has also worked in academia working as a professor at the University of Georgia, a visiting professor at Stanford, and at Cooper Union, and the University of Michigan.

Artist of the moment….Philip Taaffe

Philip Taaffe is an American artist born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in the year 1955. Taaffe is renown collage and works with mixed media using paper. Taaffe is a great example of a modern Pop- Artist as he sometimes mixes ideas from two different cultures.

Some heavy influences on the artist are Barnett Newman. For these type of appropriation works he takes an original motif, and then expands on it. As you can tell in the gallery another artist he has explored is the great Op Artist from the U.K. Bridget Riley.

What a great sense of design from this artist. A throwback to the days of fun shapes and colors last seen during the Pattern and Decoration Movement.

Artist of the moment…..Jack Pierson

Jack Pierson is an American artist that is renown for his work with film, photography, and sculpture. Pierson was born in 1960 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.  For his collegiate studies Pierson attended the Massachusetts College of Art located in Boston, Massachusetts.

Enjoys working with neon also in his work.

My personal favorites of Piersons are the small sculptures that are made of found materials. In it looks as if the letters loud have been put out of order so they are to be read only as a symbol. ]

Published a book featuring his photography of nude males.

For film he is best known for a work called Past Life in Egypt.

Is a highly commercially successful artist working for many magazines and also a photographer.

In this clip from our art lover friend James Kalm, we visit  a show for Jack Pierson. Pierson makes a few short appearances on camera, but overall a wonderful clip.
