Artist of the moment….Paula Scher

Paula Scher is an American artist born in Virginia that loves to work with maps and cartography in her artwork. Scher works for Pentagram, a design company that has offices around the world in London, New York, Berlin, and Austin, Texas.

In this clip we listen to Scher as she talks about a project in creating a cover for Fast Company magazine.

For her collegiate studies Scher attended the Tyler School of Art located in Philadelphia.

For nearly a decade Scher worked with CBS Records and Atlantic Records designing album covers and promotional materials.

She started her own company but a recession came along and the company folded,  Paula Scher then went to work for Pentagram in their New York office.

Part of teaching faculty at the School of Visual Arts of New York.

Scher has done much work for the Public Theater company, helping to bring to focus on up and coming playwrights and actors living in New York City. For this project she designed many promotional posters.

Other promotional jobs include the the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, and Museum of Modern Art.

Also designed a logo for Microsoft.

Her first show using her unique combo of maps and text was wildly successful and was extended as all the pieces sold out. Prints were even made to keep up with the demand. The map paintings sold between $40,000 and $135,000.

Artist of the moment……Street and graffiti artist Duster

A great link that allows you to purchase works from the artist.

In this clip we see a great interview with Duster talking about his history with tagging.

A side note is that much of Duster’s works are done on transit maps of larger cities, mainly New York. It reminds me of the artist I recently blogged about Joyce Kozloff who also incorporates the use of maps in her artwork.

Price range information: Smaller works can be found starting at a few hundred dollars, check out the link above. They are originals and not giclees!

In this clip we visit another street artist named Med alongside Duster in the city of Los Angeles, California.

Back in the day Duster worked with a group called United Artists. He was among the first artists to tag an entire subway car.

Duster is included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A link for the artist’s own website. A word of caution, the music plays too damn loud on so you might have to turn on the mute button on your device!

A street artist now in the collection of the Met! Wow!

Artist of the moment……Joyce Kozloff

Joyce Kozloff was born in Somerville, New Jersey in the year 1942. Kozloff  was a founding member of the Pattern and Decoration movement that flourished back in the 1970s in the United States. Her work since that time period has focused on cartography, the study of maps, to which she will include biographical or more local information about the culture. I found this type of work to remind of the Saar family of artists who include their own backgrounds as part of their finished work.

For her collegiate studies Kozloff attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She then went on to earn a masters degree from Columbia University.

The masks in the gallery are made of cast paper and then painted with acrylics.

Below a great example of Kozloff and her study and use of maps (cartography!)

In this clip we visit a series by the artist focusing on some of the Hawaiian Islands. She enjoyed working with the shapes of the islands themselves and also learning about the history of the islands.

In this clip from the Brooklyn Museum of Art we listen to Joyce Kozloff talk about the Feminist Movement.

Price range information: Many works priced between $2,000 and $6,000.

In addition to the Feminist cause Kozloff also likes to pursue activities promoting world peace.

Over her long career the Kozloff has created many public works over a two decade time period. Each commission was done to have a local feel and use of local materials and/ or ideas. An example would be Bay Area Victorian. Kozloff would use mixed media to complete these mosaics.

Started using the map as a main source for her creative outputs in the 1990s. Here is a unique idea to get people to see how destructive war can be. Kozloff made a large walk in map of the globe and on it were locations where the United States has bombed from 1945 until 2000. Its great to get people to understand the process only repeats itself over and over without fail.

Produced a series of watercolors in the 1980s. This book dealt with decoration and pornography.

What a creative artist!
