Artist of the moment…..Johnny Aculiak

Johnny Aculiak was another master Inuit carver born in the Hopewell Islands just north of  Inukjuk, Quebec, Canada region in the year 1951.

Aculiak also made jewelry and did graphic work.

Worked with traditional Inuit materials such as whalebone and caribou antlers, but his preferred choice of medium was serpentine, similar to soapstone but a little more dense and harder rock.

Enjoyed carving the figure being active, doing something. A special delight is the amount of care Aculiak put into the little details such as the harness of the young boy with the sled dogs, or the drum of the drumdancer works.

Johnny Aculiak passed away in 2008 at the age of 57 years old.
