Artist of the moment……John McCracken

 

John McCracken was an American minimalist artist. John McCracken was born in Berkeley, California the year 1934. The artist was a painter and sculptor.

The artist served in the United States Navy before attending the California College of Arts and Crafts located in Oakland, California.

John McCracken’s art is the first one shown in this clip of famous artists of the 1960s:

McCracken also taught at the University of California at Irvine, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in addition to other colleges.

The artist is a past recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The artist was always experimenting with new materials and was among the first artist to work with fiberglass and resin.

John McCracken passed away in 2011, at the age of 76.

 

The artist is part of many prestigious collections including the Smithsonian.

What a great example of modernist art. From his materials to his use of bright colors and simple clean shapes.

Artist of the moment……..Noriko Yamamoto

 

Noriko Yamamoto is a Japanese artist renown for her abstract art born in the year 1929. As a child she was taught the fine art of calligraphy by her father. Yamamoto’s family moved to Tokyo, Japan when she was a young child.

Her family lived in Honolulu, Hawaii from 1935 to 1941 before moving back to Tokyo, Japan in 1941.

In the 1950s the artist would relocate to the United States where she attended the California College of Arts and Crafts located in Oakland, California. An important mentor for the artist was the painter Richard Diebenkorn.

Yamamoto earned both a bachelors of fine art and masters of fine arts degree.

Artist of the moment…….Jules de Balincourt

 

 

Jules de Balincourt is a French born artist renown for his contemporary work. Jules de Balincourt was born in Paris, France in the year 1972. The artist attended the California College of Art and Design in San Francisco earning a B.F.A. with a focus on ceramics. He went on to earn an M.F.A. from Hunter College located in Manhattan, New York.

The artist is now based out of New York City.

In this clip we catch up with our artistic amigo James Kalm and visit a show featuring the work of Jules de Balincourt from 2007:

When I view the work of Jules de Balincourt the portraits remind me of Alex Katz and Shag. The flatness and similar drawing style to Katz and the color and playful characters of Shag. His landscapes remind me of travel artist David Klein. Klein was a great artist renown for his posters and the first American artist to have a poster sell for more than $10,000 at auction.

Artist of the moment…….Jason Jagel

 

Jason Jagel is a wonderful artist who works with very animated characters and is a highly successful commercial artist.

Jason Jagel was born in Boston, Massachusetts  in the year 1971. For his artistic education Jagel attended the California College of Arts and Crafts located in Oakland, California where he earned a bachelors of fine arts degree. Jagel went on to earn a masters degree from Stanford University.

In this clip a few works of Jagel are shown, but we also hear from the artists himself about his thoughts on drawing and creating:

Jagel is part of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is also based out of San Francisco.

Jagel has worked with hip hop artist Madlib on an album cover. Jagel has also been featured in many national magazines including Juxtapose.

Artist of the moment……Robert Bechtle

Robert Bechtle is an American artist renowned for his realistic depictions of the California landscape. Robert Bechtle was born in San Francisco, California in the year 1932. For his artistic education Bechtle attended the California College of Art and Design earning both a B.F.A.and an M.F.A. His collegiate studies were interuppted by a stint in the Army.

I mentioned a few posts back with John Chamberlain, we will take some closer looks into artists that use the automobile as a focus in their works. In this clip Bechtle talks about his use of the auto in making his art:

Bechtle is based out of San Francisco, California.

I love the design of his landscapes. They are the essence of urban Americana of the 1960s and 1970s.

Artist of the moment…..Anthony Prieto

Anthony Prieto was a wonderful ceramist born in Yaldepenas, Spain in the year 1912. Prieto is known for his unique style of pottery. When I first saw the shapes, it reminded of Picasso’s ceramic works and also  of the modernist collage master Rex Ray.

The artist and his family came to the United States in 1916.

For his artistic education Prieto attended Alfred University located in the western region of the New York State.

Prieto went on to teach at the California College of Arts and Crafts, which is now the California College of the Arts. He also taught at Mills College located in Oakland, California.

Anthony Prieto passed away in 1967.
