Artist of the moment…….Jay Rosenblum

 

 

 

Jay Rosenblum was an American Abstract painter. Jay Rosenblum was born in New York City in the year 1933.

Rosenblum attended the Pratt Institute for two years before finishing college and earning a B.A. from Bard College located in Annandale-On-Hudson, New York. The artist went on to earn a M.F.A. from the Cranbrook Academy of Art located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

The artist taught in New York City at the School of Visual Arts.

Jay Rosenblum was killed in 1989. He was riding a bicycle and was hit by a bus. The artist was 55 years of age.

The artist worked in acrylics, oils, and was also a print maker.

In addition to painting Rosenblum enjoyed playing the violin.

Artist of the moment……….Amy Sillman

 

Amy Sillman is an American painter who is renown for her portraits which are psychological studies of people in addition to her abstract paintings. Amy Sillman was born in Detroit, Michigan in the year 1966.

Sillman attended the School of Visual Arts located in New York City earning a B.F.A. The artist went on to earn a M.F.A. from Bard College also located in New York City.

Sillman is based out of New York City.

Over her career the artist has won many awards including fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Pollack- Krasner Foundations, and the Guggenheim.

Price range information: Sillman works in many mediums including etching, watercolor, gouache, and oils. Works range from $5,000 to $150,000.

The range of style of painting of Amy Sillman is amazing. Sillman’s portraits remind of Lucien Freud’s etchings. Sillman is also a fantastic abstract painter great at producing interesting shapes alongside her bold color choices.

Artist of the moment…………R.H. Quaytman

 

 

R.H. Quaytman is an American artist renown for her abstract style and mixed media works. R.H. Quaytman was born Boston, Massachusetts in the year 1961. The artist attended the Skowhegen School of Art in Maine and Bard College located in New York state. After earning a B.A. at Bard the artist studied abroad in Ireland.

Her mother was a poet named Susan Howe. Her father was an artist named Harvey Quaytman. Harvey was an abstract painter who employed geometric shapes and vivid color in his work. Harvey will be the next post.

Her work includes many mediums and many works use a silkscreened photgraphic image or on some occasions just text.

The artist uses very large pieces of wood for her works.

Quaytman is married to a film maker.

The artist is a past participant in the Whitney Biennial. She is also part of many modern art museum collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Price range information: Works start in the low six figures around $150,000. Works can reach as high as one half million dollars.

Artist of the moment…….Sylvan Lionni

 

 

 

Sylvan Lionni is an abstract artist who paints with very bold color. Lionni attended the School of Visual Arts located in New York City earning a B.F.A. The artist went on to earn a M.F.A. from Bard College located in Hudson, New York.

The artist refuses to define himself as to what kind of painter he is. Lionni believes that once you say you are this kind of artist, it closes the door to a level of creativity. The artist admires the minimalist and abstract art movements.

The artist has also worked as a printmaker most recently as an artist in residence at the University of Connecticut.

Lionni works mainly with arcylics and often works on unique surfaces such as steel.

Below a link to the website of Sylvan Lionni. The homepage has what at first glance looks to be a photograph of a ruler that is in fact a painting. In creating these works the artist has created a process similar to the way manufactured steel is produced.

What I enjoy most about this artist is his sense of space and the fact that he can create remarkable works of art either abstractly or in a trompe painting style. In his trompe style his rulers often look like photographs, very impressive!
