Diane Arbus was an American photographer renown for her black and white images of people. Diane Arbus was born in 1923 in New York City. For her subjects she found people from all walks of life from circus performers and clowns, exotic dancers, and children.

Diane Arbus attended the New School for Social Reseach located in New York City where she studied photography.

In 1941 she married Allan Arbus. She and Allan began a fashion photography business. The couple divorced and Allan became an actor appearing on many syndicated shows including Matlock and M.A.S.H. Allan Arbus passed away in 2013 at 95 years old.

Arbus also taught at Parson’s School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design.

After the divorce she continued her studies with professionals including American photographer Richard Avedon.

Diane Arbus committed suicide in 1971.

In 1972 Diane Arbus was the first American photographer to represent the United States in the Venice Biennale.
