Artist of the moment…………Jorg Immendorff

Jorg Immendorff was a fantastic painter and sculptor  born in Bleckede, Lower Saxony, Germany in the year 1945. Immendorf was perhaps better known for his left wing political ideas than for his Surrealist paintings.

Immendorf attended the Academy of Art located in Dusseldorft, Germany and also with Joseph Bueys.

Immendorf studied with a theater set designer named Teo Otto. Immendorf designed many stage sets over his lengthy career.

The artist would go back to teach at the Academy of Art as a professor.

In the early 2000s Immendorf with several prostitutes and cocaine. In Germany small amounts are okay for personal use but he surpassed this amount. He was put on probation and given a large fine.

In this clip from 1987 we visit the studio of Jorg Immendorff:

Jorg Immendorf developed A.L.S. otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This disease came to the forefront of the media earlier this year with many celebrities and C.E.O.s including Bill Gates taking the ice bucket challenge. Immendorf passed away in 2007 at the age of 61 years of age.

The disease forced him to paint with his right hand after being a lefty. Eventually he was wheelchair bound and unable to paint.

Price range information: Works range from $5,000 to $300,000.

What an extraordinary painter and in incredible life. Another American painter who died from A.L.S. was the American artist Wilson Hurley renown for his paintings of the American West.

Artist of the moment…..Imi Knoebel

Imi Knoebel was born in Dessau, Germany in the year 1940. Knoebel is renowned for his work in a minimalist style that also has an emphasis of color and space. His early works were in black and white, but since adding color the artist has become one of my favorite contemporary artists.

Knoebel attended the Academy of Art in Dusseldorf where he studied under Joseph Beuys.

Here we visit a show at the Mary Boone Gallery that took place in 2009:

In this clip we view an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art featuring the work of Imi Knoebel:

The work of Imi Knoebel reminds me a great deal of artist’s Karl Benjamin or Ellsworth Kelly, both already profiled here.

The artist is based out of Dusseldorf, Germany.

price range information: Knoebel is a prolific printmaker with prices starting at$8,000 up to $150,000. He employs mixed media and uses acrylic paint on most works.
