Artists of the moment…….Lily Balasanova and Sergei Kolevatykh

 

 

Lily Balasanova and Serge Klevtikh are an artist duo from Moscow, Russia renown for their mixed media works of heavily populated urban areas.

Both of the artists studied together in college at the Moscow Academy of Textiles. Balasanova and Kolevatykh both earned M.F.A.s in 1984.

The duo also served as artists in residence in the Netherlands.

The duo have had works placed in private and corporate collections in Russian and United States.

Though the duo creates wonderful abstract works the designs and finished products of the this pair are remarkable. They touch several styles of art including Op Art, Pop Art, and Surrealism. Their urban landscapes even have a sculptural feel to them.

Artist of the moment…….Mariah Robertson

 

 

Mariah Robertson is an American photographer renown for her abstract images. Mariah Robertson was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in the year 1975.

Robertson attended the University of California at Berkeley earning a B.A. degree. She went on to earn an M.F.A. from Yale University.

The artist is based out of Brooklyn, New York.

Her first solo exhibition took place in 2006.

Robertson is part of the permanent of the New York Museum of Modern Art.

Artist of the moment………Street Artist JM Rizzi also known as JMR

 

 

JM Rizzi is a contemporary American artist whose work is a blend of modernism and Pop art. JM Rizzi was born in Brooklyn, New York in the year 1975. The artist attended college at the School of Visual Arts located in New York City.

Over his artistic career he has painted murals for several hotels and restaurants located around the Manhattan and New York City areas. Below we view JM Rizzi at the the Pod Hotel located in Manhattan:

What I enjoy most about this artist is his sense of loose abstraction similar to what I feel when looking at water or wood.

There is also an artist named James Rizzi, who is sometimes confused with JMR.

Artist of the moment…….Maria Helena Vieiera da Silva

 

 

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was a Portuguese/ French painter who worked in an abstract style. Maria da Silva was born in Lisbon, Portugal in the year 1908.

The artist enjoyed art as a child and enrolled at the Academy of Art in Lisbon, Portugal when she was 11 years old.

She studied with much of the well established artists in many fields including Fernand Léger and Stanley W. Hayter the master engraver.

After completing her studies she began to exhibit in Paris, France in her early 20s, moving to the city in the early 1930s. She also married an artist she met there named Árpád Szenes.

The artist exhibited at the Sao Paulo Art Biennial in 1961.

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva passed away in 1992.

Price range information: The artist produced prints which start at $5,000. She also worked in oils, gouache, and watercolor. Prices range from $50,000 to $1 million dollars.

What I enjoy most about the artist’s work is her flow and movement of shapes. Another contemporary artist whose work is very abstract and similar to Da Silva, but with a nod to the field of architecture, is the artist Julie Mehretu.

Artist of the moment……Photographer David Maisel

 

 

David Maisel is an American photographer renown for his aerial shots of the American landscape taken from an airplane. David Maisel was born in New York City in the year 1961.

In this brief clip we view some wonderful aerial shots of mines taken by Maisel. I enjoy the abstract quality of these works.:

Maisel received a great collegiate education first earning a B.F.A.  from Princeton University. He went on to graduate studies first at Harvard before earning a M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts.

Maisel is a wonderful photographer who seeks out very abstract images that visual delights in color and texture.

Artist of the moment………Street Artist Elian Chali

 

 

Elian Chali is a Argentinian street artist who works in a modern abstract style with a very colorful palette. Elian Chali was born in Cordoba, Argentina in the year 1981.

Chali had his first solo exhibition in 2010. The artist creates limited edition prints.

On occasion the artist has worked with Alexis Diaz. In this clip we take a look at some works by these two great street artists:

Artist of the moment……….Robert Hedrick

 

 

Robert Hedrick is one of the most influential and renown Canadian abstract artists. Robert Hedrick was born in Windsor, Ontario in the year 1930. The artist received his collegiate education at the H.B. Beal Technical College located in London, Ontario, Canada where he studied commercial art.

Robert Hedrick is the father of yesterday’s artist of the moment Julie Hedrick.

Hedrick works in many mediums including drawing, painting, and sculpture. As a painter the artist works mainly in oils. He has also created works in watercolor, gouache, ink, and collage.

The artist is currently based out of Toronto, Ontario.

Hedrick has a master’s touch when it comes to creating innovative shapes.

Artist of the moment……..Julie Hedrick

 

 

Julie Hedrick is a Canadian artist renown for her abstract style. In addition to her painting skills Hedrick is also a well respected poet. She has also worked in the entertainment field as a theater set and costume designer.

Julie Hedrick was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the year 1958. Her father is a professional sculptor named Robert Hedrick.

The artist attended the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design.

The artist has been based out of Kingston, New York since relocating in 1990.

If you enjoy Hedrick’s style be sure and check out the Washington D.C. color field painters. The color field painters were abstract, but more organized than the abstract expressionists.

Artist of the moment…….Emily Young

 

 

Emily Young is a British sculptor renown for her work with the female face and figure. Emily Young was born in London, England in the year 1951. Her family line includes famous actors, writers, and politicians.

Young attended many higher institutions to study art including the Chelsea School of Art and the Saint Martin School of Art. She also studied in America with the sculptor Robert White.

Young worked as a graphics designer in the 1970s and 1980s designing record album covers.

Artist of the moment…..Hideo Hagiwara

 

 

Hideo Hagiwara was a Japanese printmaker born in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan in the year 1913.

His father was a government official and the artist grew up in Machuria and Korea.

The artist attended college at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.

Hagiwara’s favorite subject matter included the figure, landscapes, and abstract works. Hagiwara also liked to experiment with new processes of the printmaking technique.

Hagiwara became interested in the printmaking process after going to a class held by print master Hiratsuka Unichi.

One of the many successful print series made by the artist was based on Greek mythology.

Hideo Hagiwara passed away in 2007.

The artist had wonderful results in abstract and landscape works. His works are fun to look at because the artist was always experimenting with changing his process. The viewer always seems to see something new, different, and exciting in each work.
