Artist of the moment…….Locardia Ndandarika

 

 

Locardia Ndandarika is an internationally renown Shona artist from Zimbabwe. Locardia Ndandarika was born in Bindura, Zimbabwe in the year 1945.

As a youngster she made her first sculptures out of clay. Her favorite subject matter was animals.

For a brief period she was married to another Shona artist, Joseph Ndandarika. Joseph helped push her art to a professional level and Locardia was able to become a full time professional artist!

Locardia Ndandarika does a great job at finding interesting patterns to repeat in her work. Some great examples of this are her portrayals of bird feathers and also human hair styles.

Artist of the moment…….Ryan Callahan also known as Ryca

 

 

Ryan Callanan is a London, England based Pop artist renown for his work with characters from the film franchise Star Wars and for making art using smiling happy faces.

Ryca works a painter, print maker, and sculptor. As a sculptor he often works with cast resin. The artist has also worked as a graphics designer and his more recent work explores the fun that can be had with text and letters. He often uses the shapes of pub bar signs as background for his text.

With his newer works that feature text Ryca’s work reminds me of another well known text artist, Stephen Powers.

Artist of the moment……..Daniel Arsham

 

 

 

Daniel Arsham is a contemporary American sculptor. Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio in the year 1980. The artist attended Cooper College located in New York City.

The artist even captured the singer Pharrell Williams in a large body cast.

Arsham finds inspiration from architecture. Arsham makes inanimate architecture come to life by making in appear to be blowing in the wind.

Artist of the moment……..Marcus Amerman

 

 

Marcus Amerman is a Native American artist renown for his images made of beads. Marcus Amerman was born in Phoenix, Arizona in the year 1959.

The artist earned a B.F.A. from Whitman College located in Walla Walla, Washington. Amerman also attended the Institute of American Indian Arts.

Amerman represents the Choctaw tribe.

Amerman has also designed apparel.

Amerman is based out of Sante Fe, New Mexico.

The artist sees his work as a blend of Native American culture and Pop Art. He has portrayed celebrities including Janet Jackson. Amerman is the only bead artist to have his work appear in Playboy magazine.

Artist of the moment………James Haunt

 

James Haunt is an American street artist based out of Los Angeles, California. The artist is renown for his paintings of the female face and figure.

James Haunt’s government name is James Gillette. Haunt is his alter ego.

The artist has been very success in his commercial ventures. He has helped to design apparel and watches.

Its interesting to see the different portrayals of the mouth and lips in art. Some other artists who came up with some great designs include Andy Warhol and the photographer Marilyn Minter.

Artist of the moment……..Geoffrey Holder

 

 

Geoffrey Holder was a world renown painter, dancer, and actor. Geoffrey Holder was born in the country of Trinidad and Tobago in the year 1930.

Holder attended Queen’s Royal College located in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

As an actor you may have seen his work on the Broadway stage in New York. He was also known for appearing in the famous James Bond movie Live and Let Die. Holder also appeared in ads for 7 up soda.

Holder was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for his paintings.

The artist won a Tony award for costume design for a broadway show that featured “The Wizard of Oz” with an African- American cast.

Holder was also an avid photographer and even had a book of his photographs published.

Holder was married to one of the first African American dancers, Carmen de Lavallade. The couple had one son and were married 59 years.

Geoffrey Holder passed away in 2014. He was 84 years of age.

Holder lived a wonderful life and loved the arts. He can be an inspiration for the fact he never stopped learning and was always developing his skills in new mediums from painting, to dance, costume design, and acting.

Artist of the moment…….Jay Rosenblum

 

 

 

Jay Rosenblum was an American Abstract painter. Jay Rosenblum was born in New York City in the year 1933.

Rosenblum attended the Pratt Institute for two years before finishing college and earning a B.A. from Bard College located in Annandale-On-Hudson, New York. The artist went on to earn a M.F.A. from the Cranbrook Academy of Art located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

The artist taught in New York City at the School of Visual Arts.

Jay Rosenblum was killed in 1989. He was riding a bicycle and was hit by a bus. The artist was 55 years of age.

The artist worked in acrylics, oils, and was also a print maker.

In addition to painting Rosenblum enjoyed playing the violin.

Artist of the moment……..Street Artist Stikki Peaches

 

 

Stikki Peaches is an amazing street artist and print maker from Montreal, Canada. The artist creates wheatpastes for most of his street art. His work in the studio consists of acrylic paint, silkscreen, and collage.

The artist often uses superheroes and comic strip characters in his work.

Stikki Peaches artwork is a great example of contemporary Pop Art. I really his mix of comic book heroes and celebrity icons.

Artist of the moment……Lisa Bartleson

 

 

 

Lisa Bartleson is a contemporary abstract sculptor with a very unique creative process. Her works are cast mixtures of bio-resin and pigment which is poured on in layers. Lisa Bartelson was born in Seattle, Washington in the year 1968.

Bartelson attended college at the University of Colorado at Greeley where she didn’t study art, but earned a degree in biology.

Bartleson enjoys painting the light of Southern California. The artist is based out of Venice, California.

The artist began exhibiting her work in 2002.

I enjoy her works featuring warm colors. The viewer has the feeling of being in a searing hot and sunny day.

Artist of the moment………..Street Artist Curiot

 

Curiot is a street artist from Mexico renown for his work with imaginary creatures. Curiot’s government name is Favio Martinez. Curiot blends his creatures with symbols from his culture including the Day of the Dead.

The artist is based out of Mexico City, Mexico.

I really enjoy the many subjects the artist puts into his work. A flower, a beast or creature, and the human figure are represented in many images. His work reminds of the Italian master Guiseppe Arcimboldo. Its amazing the diverse strokes the artist is able to paint with spray paint.
