Artist of the moment……..Leon Golub

Leon Golub was an American painter renown for his paintings which show the figure or figures in situations that explore power and sex. Some locations the artist depicted were brothels and torture chambers. The artist also painted well known political figures including Ho Chi Minh, Richard Nixo, and Chairman Mao.

Leon Golub was born in Chicago, Illinois in the year 1922. Golub attended the University of Chicago where he earned a B.F.A. Golub went on earn a M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago.

The artist married painter Nancy Spero. The couple had 3 children. The couple were married for nearly 50 years.

When beginning their art careers, the couple decided to move to Europe. Since the couple both enjoyed painting themes of power and sex, the duo thought their work would be more acceptable in Europe versus the United States.

Leon Golub passed away in 2004 at the age of 82.

In this clip we catch up with the great James Kalm to view a show featuring Leon Golub’s work:

Over his career the artist worked in many mediums including oils, lacquer, and acrylics.

Golub is part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago and Metropolitan Museum of Art located in New York City.

What a great style of realism and expressionism. One only wonders what Leon Golub would paint today with all of the violent images we see from mass media that include I.S.I.S. or even church shootings.

Artist of the moment………Gerrit Rietveld

Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch furniture designer and architect. Rietveld is associated with the De Stijl movement. The movement emphasized straight lines and primary colors.

Below a brief documentary on Gerrit Rietveld:

Some of his most famous designs were the famous Red and Blue Chair, the Zig Zag Chair, and the Schroder House. The Schröder House being the best and only example of De Stijl architecture.

The house was built in Utrecht for a client who lived in the house and passed away in the mid 80s. The house is now a museum and can be visited by the public and below we do just that!:

As a person who looks for artistic design in everything I think his chairs are incredible functional works of art. Its great to see a movement such as the De Stijl, that can be represented by a piece of furniture or even more fascinating, a house.

Agathe de Baillencourt is a French painter renown for her abstract style. Agathe de Bailliencourt was born in Paris, France in the year 1974. Baillencourt is a drawer, painter, and installation artist.

Agathe de Bailliencourt attended the Ecole Boulle located in Paris.

Although her work is quite abstract in some pieces we get the suggestion of an interior with a door or the exterior with a flag. These are my favorite works of the artist. She has a wonderful use of color and also the clever inclusion of text in her paintings.

Price range information: Sorry none available.

The artist enjoys painting in her studio but she also exposes herself to an entirely different approach by executing very large installation works that take up many meters of space. Her installation works often have a theme of comparing the straight man made shapes with the natural and organic flowing lines we observe in nature.

The artist is now based out of Berlin, Germany.

We close by watching the artist complete an on site installation via time lapse photography:
