Artist of the moment………Maya Hayuk

Maya Hayuk is a contemporary American street artist renown for her abstract work with geometric shapes. Maya Hayuk was born in Baltimore, Maryland in the year 1969.

Hayuk attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design located in Boston. She also studied at the Skowhegan School of Art and also in Odessa, Urkaine.

The artist works in various sizes from multiple story size murals to smaller works such as the hamburger in the gallery.

In 2013 the artist was chosen for a show at the gallery of the University of California at Los Angeles. In this clip we visit this show:

In addition to painting Hayuk has worked in many mediums including photography, printmaking, and writing. She has also curated many exhibitions.

Hayuk draws on patterns that exist in real life including mandalas and patterns found on manicured nail art. Mandalas are part of the Hindu and Buddhist religions and they are circular shapes that represent the universe.

Below the artist talks about a very large mural she created:

The artist has a wonderful sense of design and color. Her shapes and bold color choices remind me of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes.
