Lassnig attended the Academy of Art located in Vienna, Austria. She also studied later at the School of Visual Arts located in New York City.

She began as an abstract expressionist painter, as that was one of the most popular art movements when her career began.

Below we visit a retrospective that took place for the Lassnig in New York City:

Maria Lassnig passed away earlier this year in May at the age of 94 years old.

Lassnig had a very unique idea of painting the figure and especially self portraits. What I enjoy most about Lassnig to explore and conquer different ideas and techniques of painting. I wondered if Georgia O’Keefe ever painted any self portraits in such a unique manner.

Artist of the moment………Kawase Hasui

Kawase Hasui was a fantastic Japanese woodblock artist renown for his images of the landscape. Hasui also painted the figure.

Hasui studied privately with master artist Kiyokata Kaburagi at his studio.

Kawase Hasui was born in 1883 and was part of Shin Hanga movement. He spent some time as an illustrator.

In 1923 a very large earthquake ruined much of his artwork.

In this clip we view a montage of works by Kawase Hasui:

Kawase Hasui passed away in 1953.

Price range information: Prints range from $1,000 to $10,000. The artist worked in watercolor and also painted originals in oils.

What I enjoy most about the work of this master printmaker is the locations of his work. For instance its great to see the imagery by French/ American artist Antoine Blanchard and the work of his daughters. Many times they painted the same location. Its true also of the American Hudson River artists.

Hasui painted a few famous locales, but for the most part he stuck to painting the more rural and quieter scenes of Japan that might be surpassed by the average tourist. Hasui offers us a great idea of day to day life in Japan.

The use of pure pigment for color in this abstract makes for art that is very fun to look it. Many of his shapes remind me of classic game boards, a major activity for people before the invention of the internet.

Scheibitz is now based out of Berlin, Germany.

This is a wonderful form of abstract art because it loosely resembles so many things that many viewers of his work can see different ideas and images in his work. I am really fond of the image of the man with the hat in the gallery.

Artist of the moment…………Oskar Schlemmer

Oskar Schlemmer was an artist renown or his costume and theater design. Oskar Schlemmer was born in Stuttgart, Germany in the year 1888.

Schlemmer is associated with the Bauhaus movement. The artist’s parents both died when he was rather young and the artist supported himself from the age of 15 as an apprentice working with crafts such as inlay which is similar to working with mosaics.

The artist worked as a professor at the Bauhaus until the political situation was such that he resigned from teaching at the school.

Schlemmer also designed dancing performances. Here we see glimpses from well renown sequence of Schlemmer’s:

Below a wonderful montage of works by Schlemmer:

The artist’s works later in life were somewhat marred by the fact his paintings were obscured by the Nazi regime. In this regard I conser Schlemmer to be a precursor to Chinese artist Ai WeiWei. Both were thought of to be dissidents to their country’s current political structure.

Oskar Schlemmer passed away in 1943 at the age of 54 years old.

Price range information: Works range from $10,000 for a work in ink or pencil. The artist had a work sell at Christie’s Auction House for nearly $1.5 million dollars.
