Jimmy Ernst was a wonderful painter renown for his abstract expressionist paintings. Jimmy is the son of Max Ernst, the renown Surrealist painter. His mother was an art historian and journalist.  Ernst received no formal art training.

Jimmy Ernst was born in Cologne, Germany in the year 1920. The artist was raised by his mother in Germany whilst his father remained in France working as a painter. His mother was Jewish and when Hitler took over Germany his mother was put under surveillance and Jimmy Ernst was sent to live with grandfather.

Jimmy Ernst came to the United States in 1938. He sought the release of his father from a Nazi occupied France and received. His mother however was killed at at Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944.

The artist was also a teacher a Brooklyn College located in New York City. He also married and had two children that went on to become professional artists.

Ernst was given membership to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Academy of Design.

My favorite Monday night program, the Antiques Roadshow, takes a closer look at work by Jimmy Ernst:

Jimmy Ernst passed away in 1984.
