Artist of the moment…….Lukas Samaras

Lukas Samaras was born in Kastoria, Greece in the year 1936. The artist is renowned for his disdain of people and his narcissism. If you have seen the work of Chuck Close, you may recognize this famous image made by Close of artist Lukas Samaras.

One of Samaras most acclaimed series is one of the artist posing for himself using a Polaroid camera. These images remind me of the modern day selfies.

Samaras attended Rugers, University located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Some of his classmates include the great Claes Oldenburg, already profiled here.

The artist works in many mediums including painting, performance art, sculpture, and photographer. Its not fair to classify him to one medium, the artist works in many mediums and uses a great deal of creativity in his art.

Here we visit a show featuring the work of Lukas Samaras with the great James Kalm:

Price range information:  Works range from $12,000 to $400,000.

A documentary was made on the life of Lukas Samaras, below a trailer for this movie:

I enjoy the many subjects explored by the artist. I would enjoy a series of his done on birds, but using all mediums from photography to performance art.

Samaras is part of prestigious collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Museum, and the Getty Museum.

Artist of the moment…….Anne Faust

Anne Faust is wonderful artist renown for her prints featuring birds. Her preferred type of print is the serigraph. Faust attended Boston University School for the Fine Arts.

Faust was born in the year 1936.

The artist is married to a photographer who specializes in birds.

In this clip we view the printmaking process of Anne Faust:

Price range information: Sorry none available.

The artist not only paints and creates wonderful images of birds, her backgrounds are wonderful mix of realism and abstract shapes. The artist makes wonderful patterns using leaves and water to add wonderful shapes to her compositions. My favorite artist who found patterns in the landscape and also in the sky and cloud patterns, was the master painter of animals, Bob Kuhn.

Kuhn found great organic shapes in ice patterns when painting polar bears or leaves and grass when painting the animals of Africa. Kuhn’s work is a marvel to behold because of his use of pencil and acrylics.

Artist of the moment…….Nancy Cawdrey

Nancy Cawdrey is a wonderful artist who works with the floral and American West genre. Nancy Cawdrey was born in 1948. Her father was a military officer and growing up she was able to experience many different cultures. For her artistic education Cawdrey studied abroad in Paris, France and also in London, England.

Cawdrey is based out of Bigfork, Montana.

Here we visit the artist at her home in Montana. The artist credits Montana for her inspiration and she often will paint in plein air in the Big Sky Country:

The artist’s work looks different than many of her peers working in the same genre, the artist works with the Asian technique painting with dye on silk and mixing colors on the painting surface. Though she is renown for her dye works, Cawdrey also paints in oils and watercolor.

Cawdrey emphasizes color and texture patterns in her work.

I enjoy the style of this artist. She brings new life to a centuries old genre. By mixing colors on her painting surface she is able to use color in areas such as the fur of animals or water reflections.
