Brassai was born Gyula Halasz was born in Brasso, Transylvania in the year 1899. The artist took the name as a tribute to his hometown which was originally in Transylvania, but later became part of Hungary.
Halasz studied art in Germany and Transylvania.
Brassai was renown for his photography, mainly of Paris, that took place at night. These photographs are grainy in texture, and some might not even think they are professional. The artist made these dreamy works as part of his style. He thought these works left a certain mystery to the viewer.

He made a book out of his first photographs of the Parisian night life which was titled Paris At Night. The book contained images of the murky people found in the streets of Paris at this time including prostitutes. The book put the images of Brassai on the international art scene.
Brassai passed away in 1984.
