Claude Howell was born in Wilmington, North Carolina in the year 1915. Claude Howell painted the figure in an expressionist manner with vivid color. Some of his specialty subjects include tourists on the beach, fisherman on the docks, and works that showed the coastal areas of land.
The artist was self taught for the most part but studied with well known regional artist Elizabeth Chant.
Howell was based out of North Carolina for much of career.
Howell helped to start the art program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He ran the program for nearly 3 decades.
