Artist of the moment……David Reed

 

David Reed is an American artist renown for his large mixed media works. David Reed was born in San Diego, California in the year 1946. Reed is a painter, installation artist, and also works with video.

David Reed studied in New York City, Maine, before earning a degree from Reed College located in Portland, Oregon.

price range information: Works range from $10,000 to $100,000. Reed works in oils and acrylics.

The artist has won grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and also the Guggenheim Foundation.

Reed is best known for the narrow shape of his works and his use of color.

Reed was named artist in residence at the Minnesota Institute of the Arts. In this clip a great interview with David Reed discussing this opportunity:

Reed has a son who is an internationally acclaimed author named John Reed.

What a wonderful combination of shapes. Though his work is abstract, the swirls in his work give it wonderful sense of life.

Artist of the moment……Claude Howell

 

Claude Howell was born in Wilmington, North Carolina in the year 1915. Claude Howell painted the figure in an expressionist manner with vivid color. Some of his specialty subjects include tourists on the beach, fisherman on the docks, and works that showed the coastal areas of land.

The artist was self taught for the most part but studied with well known regional artist Elizabeth Chant.

Howell was based out of North Carolina for much of career.

Howell helped to start the art program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He ran the program for nearly 3 decades.

price range information: Works range from $5,000 to $40,000. The artist worked in chalk, graphite, oils, and watercolor.

Claude Howell passed away in 1997. He quit painting in 1985 due to cataracts on his eyes.

I enjoy the landscapes of this artist. A great combination of shapes and color.
