Artist of the moment……James Edward Buttersworth

The next couple of posts lets take a look at a wonderful family of painters who are renown for their maritime paintings, the Buttersworth family of artists. James Buttersworth was born in London, England in the year 1817. His father was renowned maritime painter Thomas Buttersworth, who mentored the his son.

James Buttersworth relocated to the United States in the early 1840s.

The artist is best known for his paintings of boats racing in the America’s Cup boating competition. His work is very important as this was a time period before photography captured the races.

What I enjoy most about the work of this artist is his great sense of atmosphere. The first thing I review when taking in a maritime painting, the painting of the water and skies. James Buttersworth painted great storms and choppy waters. Even in smaller works the artist is able to capture the dramatic stormy skies and wonderful lighting the sea provides.

James Buttersworth passed away in 1894.

In this clip a great montage of paintings by James Buttersworth that show his great ability to capture storms and atmospheric conditions of the sea:

The artist is included in the America’s Cup Hall of Fame for his wonderful maritime paintings.

Price range information: Works range from $25,000 to $800,000. The artist painted mainly in oils but also worked in watercolor.

The Buttersworth family as a whole reminds me a great deal of the Gruppe family of artists also renown for their maritime paintings.
