Artist of the moment…….Pat Steir

Pat Steir is an American artist renown for her large scale abstract paintings. Pat Steir was born in Newark, New Jersey in the year 1938.

Steir attended two of America’s best art colleges in the Pratt Institute of New York City and Boston University College of Fine Arts. After graduation Steir worked as a commercial illustrator.

Steir has worked in the print industry since 1977.

Steir is a painter and printmaker. Here we view an interview with the artist and a leading printmaker, Crown Point Press:

In this clip we view a show that opened in 2014 in New York City at Cheim and Read Gallery:

Pat Steir is also part of many prestigious collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art both located in New York, and the Tate Museum of London, England.

Price range information: Works range from $5,000 to $400,000. Steir is a prolific printmaker producing etchings and woodcuts.

The artist reminds me of Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.  In fact Steir landscapes have much in common with Eastern painting ideals, stressing feeling and atmosphere rather than a specific location.

As a refresher here is a quick Art21 interview with the famous Hiroshi Sugimoto and talking about the themes of Western style of painting:

Artist update Mickalane Thomas

Mickalane Thomas is my favorite artist working with collage and mixed media. Thomas is renown for her large figure works of African American women. She usually includes Swarovski rhinestones in each work. Below is an image of the artist beside one of her works. The artist attended Yale.

In this clip we visit a show in 2014 that features the work of Mickalane Thomas. The show takes place at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery:
