Artist of the moment……Stanley William Hayter



Stanley William Hayter was a British artist renown for his abstract paintings. Stanley William Hayter was born in Hackney, London, England in the year 1901. Hayter was very smart attending King’s College located in London where he studied geology and chemistry. After his collegiate career finished the artist moved to Africa working for a large oil company.

Hayter got stricken by malaria and had to leave his post abroad. Whilst he recovered he had a great show of his work, and his artistic career was born!

Stanley William Hayter studied briefly at the Academie Julien located in Paris, France.

His father was also a professional artist, painter William Hayter.

Stanley William Hayter passed away in 1988 at the age of 86 years old.

The artist also taught printmaking at his famed school, Atelier 17. Many artists learned the print from this master including Mark Rothko. Hayter’s specialty was engraving.

Stanley William Hayter has had many shows at the Tate and is part of their permanent collection.

Hayter became both an OBE and CBE,  Officer of British Empire and Commander of British Empire.

Price range information: Works range from $5,000 to $40,000. Hayter produced a great deal of engravings.
