Artist of the moment………Stanford Derere

Stanford Derere is a wonderful artist from Zimbabwe renown for his sculptures of birds. Stanford Derere was born in Zimbabwe in 1956.

Derere got his artistic education at the BAT Workshop located at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

Artist of the moment…….Zhang Huan

Zhang Huan is a contemporary Chinese artist born in Anyang, Henan Province, China in the year 1965. Zhang Huan works in many mediums including performance art, photography, sculpting, and painting. The artist is very innovative producing works with ash and resin.

Zhang Huan attended Henan University for his B.F.A. The artist went on to earn a M.F.A. from Beijing’s Academy of Fine Arts.

Zhang Huan was included in the Whitney Biennial of 2002.

The artist has produced over 40 works of performance art.

Artist of the moment…..Israel Achiam

Israel Achiam was a fantastic sculptor born in the North of Israel in the year 1916 to a lower class family. Achiam worked in a very modern style representing the figure. Some genres explored by the artist include religion, the bible, and peace among civilization.

Achiam studied how to use technology with the goal of increasing produce and crop yields. He was arrested for some political ideas he had and whilst in his jail cell began carving on his wall. And an artist was born!

From the middle of the 1940s Achiam was based out of Paris, France. He was able to meet and was renown among the modern artists including Picasso, Jean DuBuffett, and Michael Tapies.

The artist worked with stone and wood.

Israel Achiam passed away in 2005.
