Artist of the moment…….Marguerite Zorach


Marguerite Zorach was born in Santa Rosa, California in the year 1887. Marguerite Zorach was one of the first Modernist painters in the country. Zorach had a lengthy career as a commercial artist and designer. Her designs were used in the production of batiks and fabrics. The artist also worked in a Cubist style.

For her artistic education Zorach attended Bates College located in Lewistown, Maine.

Here we have another wonderful husband and wife team of artists who painted in the same Modernist style. The two met whilst studying art abroad in Paris, France. The couple was married on Christmas Eve in 1912.

Both husband and wife were past winners of the Logan Medal of the Arts. This prize was associated with the Art Institute of Chicago but ceased to exist after 1940.

Marguerite Zorach was  participant in the famed 1913 Armory Show. The first show of Modernist art in America.

Zorach was also part of the WPA program as a painter of murals.

Marguerite Zorach passed at the age of 1968 at 80 years of age.
