Artist of the moment……Stephen Pace


Stephen Pace was an American painter renowned for his abstract style. Stephen Pace was born in Charleston, Missouri in the year 1918. The artist’s parents owned a ran their farm and a grocery store. For his artistic education Pace didn’t study art until his late teen years. At this time he was able to study privately with painter Robert Lahr.

Pace enlisted in the Army and served during World War 2. He was injured and was able to meet some of Paris finest artists in Pablo Picasso and his friends after being sent to the hospital.

After his discharge from the Army Pace moved to Mexico where he studied art in the central part of the country. Upon meeting American artist Milton Avery Pace headed for New York City.

Pace also studied with Hans Hofmann.

price range information: Pace worked in watercolors and oils with prices ranging from $10,000 to $80,000.

In New York City Pace found his way as an Abstract Expressionist painter.

Stephen Pace passed away in 2010 at the age of 91 years old.

Though his abstract works are great, I am just fascinated by his work with the figure. The figure is very abstract but has a great animated and lifelike feel to them.
