Artist of the moment……Mabel Nigiyok

Mabel Nigiyok is a fantastic printmaker from Holman, Nunavut Territory, Canada in the year 1938. Nigiyok has been included in the annual Holman annual print collection for more than 2 decades.

The artist became a great printmaker by watching other people who were already making a living at it, seeing what they did, and improving upon it. After making a few trips to the workshop in Holman the next year Nigiyok started developing her own prints.

Nigiyok loves to tell stories with her artwork. Nigiyok enjoys bringing to life the fables and stories she heard as a young child.

From a design aspect, Nigiyok is certainly one of the best Inuit draftsman as her works have an incredible feel of dimension rather than the flatter Inuit prints we usually see.
