Artist of the moment…….Laurence Lowry

Laurence Lowry was born in Stretford, Lancashire in the year 1887. Lowry is renowned for his “cityscape” paintings of London and Pendlebury. Lowry’s father passed away in 1932 and then he took care of his mother. He would care for her in the day and paint after she went to sleep. ¬†For his artistic education Lowry attended the Manchester School of Art.

Lowry was also an official war artist.

After he died many nude figure works were found by the artist.

The artist had all clocks set at different times in his house. Lowry would tell visitors it was so they would not all chime at one time. But a visitor wouldn’t know the real time without wearing a watch themselves!

Lowry was an extremely private man and avoided people to a fault. Lowry kept a suitcase by his door so he could rightfully claim he was just on his way “out the door.”

Some critics call his work naive, but I find his figure works to be similar to the  mural painters of Mexico. Remember the wonderful workers painted by Diego Rivera and others with huge hands and feet. It showed the strength but also the duress of working in the fields and what it does to hands and feet over the years.

For instance “John” might be a size 10 shoe, but because his feet are swollen all the time he has to wear a size 12. I got the sense that the labourers of this time period worked very hard and it showed in their bodies, similar to the workers of Mexico.

Laurence Lowry passed away in 1976.

Lowry is a great artist and sounds like he enjoyed being a hermit. The Tate Museum has held a retrospective on the artist’s career. Its also interesting the Lowry turned down two times the chance at becoming knighted. This is supposedly another record that he holds.

In this clip a brief interview with Onias Mupumha talking about working with flowers and cobalt stone:

I enjoy the fact that this artist is one of few shona artists specializing in floral and leaf works. Mupumha has fun with shapes and leaves are very animated and filled with energy as if blowing in the wind.
