Artist of the moment……Jean Paul Riopelle

For his artistic education Riopelle studied modern and traditional paintings styles at the National School of Art  and also studied architecture at the Polytechnic Institute both located in Montreal, Canada.

The artist joined the Canadian group of painters the Automastistes.

In 1947 the artist relocated to Paris, France and exhibited with the Surrealist painters. In the late 1940s the artist would switch to a more Abstract Expression style of painting.

You may see some Jackson Pollack like similarities with Riopelle. Riopelle enjoyed laying paint on very thick in an impasto manner.

Riopelle was in a long relationship with the painter Joan Mitchell. The both had houses and studios close to Givery, France. You may recognize Giverny as the gardens where Monet produced his magic.

Riopelle was made a member of the Canadian Academy of Art.

From Christie’s Auction House we view a painting getting ready for auction by Jean Paul Riopelle with a pre-sale estimate of more than $1 million dollars:

He is estimated to have completed nearly two thousand paintings.

Jean Paul Riopelle passed away in 2002.

Price range information: Works range from $25,000 to more than $1 million dollars for a work at auction. The artist made collages and worked in oils, watercolor, and mixed media.
